Het repareren van het spoor bij Vught na het ontsporen van een werktrein afgelopen zaterdag, duurt langer dan verwacht. Tussen Den Bosch en Tilburg kunnen daarom voorlopig toch nog geen treinen rijden. De dienstregeling tussen Den Bosch en Boxtel is vanaf morgen wel weer zoals normaal.

In de nacht van vrijdag op zaterdag ontspoorde een zware werktrein, die met geplande werkzaamheden bezig was. Hoe dat kon gebeuren is nog niet bekend, maar het ongeval veroorzaakte flinke schade aan het spoor. Daardoor was er de rest van het weekend en vandaag geen treinverkeer mogelijk tussen Den Bosch en Boxtel, en tussen Den Bosch en Tilburg.

Gisteren kondigde ProRail aan dat de reparatie voor dinsdagochtend klaar zou zijn. Inmiddels is duidelijk dat de schade groter is dan gedacht. ProRail meldt dat delen van een wissel, enkele meters aan spoorstaven en meerdere dwarsliggers beschadigd zijn. Dat wordt nu hersteld. Treinen tussen Den Bosch en Tilburg gaan pas weer rijden als dat klaar is. De verwachting is nu dat dat woensdag wordt.

Extra stop

Vanaf dinsdagochtend kunnen de treinen tussen Den Bosch en Boxtel wel weer rijden, waarmee een belangrijke verbinding met onder meer Eindhoven en Maastricht weer open is. Daarbij gaan intercity's op het traject een extra stop maken in Boxtel, zodat het omreizen naar Tilburg een stuk sneller gaat.

Ook zet NS langere treinen in op het traject. In het begin van de avond werkt NS de reisplanner bij.

Blij, maar nog niet helemaal gerustgesteld. Dat is de reactie van vader Patrick Deelen op het nieuws dat het kabinet vier gespecialiseerde zorgvilla's voor zeer zieke en gehandicapte kinderen voorlopig open wil houden. "Heel fijn, die intentie van de minister, maar er moet wel een concreet plan komen voor het personeel, want die mensen zijn straks allemaal weg."

Villa ExpertCare maakte in januari bekend de zorgvilla's te sluiten, omdat de vergoeding volgens het bedrijf niet toereikend is. Dat was een grote schok voor de kinderen en hun ouders, omdat zij een nieuwe plek moeten zoeken. Die plekken zijn zeer schaars. Om aandacht te vragen voor de sluiting besloot Deelen met zijn zoon naar Den Haag te gaan, waar de Kamer vandaag sprak over gehandicaptenzorg.

De conducteur in de trein van Assen naar Den Haag vertelt door de intercom dat er een speciale passagier aan boord is. "Goedemorgen dames en heren, ik heb hier een extra bericht want ik zit hier met John en John is 10 jaar oud." Hij verwijst naar het debat in Den Haag waar naartoe onderweg is. "En jij gaat vertellen dat ze open moeten blijven, John", zegt de conducteur. "Ik vind jou een held!"

Op adem komen

De 10-jarige jongen is 1 van 81 kinderen die wel eens logeert in zo'n zorgvilla. Daar krijgen ze essentiële, specialistische zorg. Het bedrijf Villa ExpertCare maakte eerder bekend dat de villa's eind deze maand moeten sluiten vanwege personeelstekort en geldgebrek. Er werd toen beloofd dat voor alle kinderen een goed alternatief geregeld zou worden.

John verblijft twee weekenden per maand in de zorgvilla in Wezep en zonder die hulp gaat het onmogelijk worden om John goede zorg te bieden. Vader Patrick noemt het zelfs levensbedreigend voor zijn zoon. "Wij redden het niet als gezin zonder de hulp van de zorgvilla. Gisteren maakte ik nog een fout met de medicatie omdat ik te moe was. Gelukkig liep het goed af."

John is geboren met een spierziekte en bij een medische ingreep is zijn luchtweg beschadigd. "Hij ademt nu met een buisje, maar daar moet je 24/7 op letten", vertelt zijn vader. "'s Nachts moet je ook alert zijn, want hij ligt dan aan een beademingsmachine. Overdag naar school gaat thuiszorg mee." De twee weekenden waarin John naar de zorgvilla gaat, kan het gezin even op adem komen.

Stoppen met werken

Ook voor Boaz (10) en zijn familie is de specialistische zorg in de villa essentieel. Boaz raakte op 1-jarige leeftijd door een hersenvliesontsteking meervoudig gehandicapt. Als de zorg in de villa wegvalt, zijn er weinig alternatieven. "Er komt dan sowieso meer zorg bij opa en oma terecht", vertelt vader Marcel Barzilay. "We zullen ook minder tijd voor onze dochter hebben en misschien moet een van ons wel stoppen met werken."

Vier jaar geleden waren er nog negen zorgvilla's in Nederland. Twee zijn er al failliet en nu dreigen er dus nog vier van ExpertCare te sluiten. De ouders vertrouwen er niet op dat er een alternatief geregeld kan worden vóór het eind van de maand.

"Er is nu al minder personeel omdat vacatures niet opgevuld worden en al het personeel is aan het solliciteren voor een baan ergens anders", aldus Patrick Deelen. "Het zijn loze beloftes van ExpertCare dat ze nieuwe plekken gaan regelen voor onze kinderen voordat de bestaande villa's dichtgaan."

De High Tech Campus nummer 12 in Eindhoven is nu nog een kale vlakte. Vandaag is er nog geen bouwvakker te bekennen, maar binnenkort gaan ze aan de slag om daar in ruim een jaar tijd een fabriek neer te zetten voor vernieuwende computerchips.

Die fabriek is een plan van onderzoeksorganisatie TNO. In het gebouw komt een fabriekslijn voor onderzoek naar chips die werken met licht in plaats van elektriciteit. Het doel is om deze vernieuwende chips goedkoper te maken.

Zo snel als licht

Computerchips die met licht in plaats van elektriciteit werken, heten fotonische chips. Het voordeel van licht is dat je daarmee veel sneller informatie kan verplaatsen dan op een draadje met elektriciteit, zegt Ton van Mol van TNO.

Dit kennen we al van internet met glasvezel. Glasvezel werkt ook op licht in plaats van stroom. Daarom is internet via glasvezel veel sneller dan via de kopernetwerken.

"Het omzetten van elektrische signalen van jouw computer naar licht, is een goed voorbeeld van het gebruik van fotonische chips", zegt Van Mol. "Die chips worden nu al gebruikt, bijvoorbeeld door de bedrijven die de kastjes maken waar glasvezel je huis binnenkomt."

Goedkopere chips

Computerchips worden gemaakt op ronde schijven van een speciaal materiaal. Die schijven heten wafers. Fotonische chips worden nu gemaakt op wafers met een doorsnede van omgerekend iets meer dan 10 centimeter. In de industrie rekenen ze met Engelse inches: dit zijn wafers van 4 inch.

TNO wil in de nieuwe fabriek onderzoeken of fotonische chips ook op wafers van 6 inch gemaakt kunnen worden. Dat lijkt een kleine stap. "Maar met zo'n grotere schijf kunnen dan twee keer zo veel chips gemaakt worden", zegt Van Mol.

Zo kunnen op een fabriekslijn veel meer chips gemaakt worden. Dan zijn ze goedkoper, en dat is belangrijk om te concurreren met chipbedrijven uit de Verenigde Staten, China en Taiwan, zegt Van Mol.

Meer dan 120 miljoen euro

De bouw van de fabriek kost 65 miljoen euro, zegt de High Tech Campus Eindhoven. Dat bedrag is inclusief de kosten van de speciale ruimte waar zelfs geen stofdeeltjes mogen komen: de cleanroom.

In die ruimte komen de tientallen machines die samen de chiplijn maken. Die kosten bij elkaar ook nog eens 62 miljoen euro, zegt Van Mol.

Naast de TNO-chiplijn is ook het Nederlandse bedrijf SMART Photonics van plan om een fabriekslijn voor 6 inch-wafers in het gebouw te plaatsen. Door de twee chiplijnen naast elkaar op te zetten, willen de partijen van elkaar leren, want van 4 naar 6 inch is makkelijker gezegd dan gedaan.

De machines moeten allemaal aangepast worden om geschikt te zijn voor grotere wafers. En het maken van chips is moeilijk: er kan van alles niet goed werken of misgaan.

De officiële opening van het gebouw moet in mei 2027 plaatsvinden. TNO hoopt dat de fabriek in het jaar daarop helemaal draait. Dan moeten er 10.000 fotonische chips per jaar gemaakt worden. Als het allemaal goed werkt, wil TNO de fabriekslijn uiteindelijk verkopen, bijvoorbeeld aan SMART Photonics.

Nog meer huizen bouwen, het industrieterrein Harselaar uitbreiden, een grotere legerkazerne, nieuwe scholen én een zwembad. Barneveld zit vol ambitie, blijkt uit de partijprogramma's voor de gemeenteraadsverkiezingen op 18 maart.

Maar de gemeente kampt ook met een overvol stroomnet. Plek voor grote aansluitingen, bijvoorbeeld voor bedrijven, is al jaren niet meer vanzelfsprekend. En vorige maand waarschuwde netbeheerder Tennet dat er straks mogelijk zelfs geen huizen meer kunnen worden aangesloten in de regio.

Voor alle bestaande plannen is nu al niet genoeg ruimte om ze zomaar uit te voeren, bleek toen ambtenaren dit op een rijtje zetten. En dus moet de lokale politiek steeds vaker creatief zijn óf kiezen.

Gemeenten kunnen weinig doen

"Sinds ik raadslid ben, is dat steeds meer een beperking geworden waarmee je moet omgaan", zegt Jarne van Schaik, lijsttrekker van de Barneveldse VVD. "Continu is de vraag: welke ontwikkeling kunnen we doorzetten? Of worden we belemmerd doordat er te weinig stroom is en moeten we creatiever worden."

Gemeenten kunnen maar weinig doen tegen het overvolle stroomnet. "Wel kunnen ze overleggen met netbeheerders en andere gemeenten", zegt Martijn Gerritsen, onderzoeker aan de Radboud Universiteit. Dan weten netbeheerders tijdig waar gemeenten gaan bouwen, en worden de plannen op tijd afgestemd.

Het is de taak van die netbeheerders om het stroomnet te verzwaren. Maar gemeenten kunnen wel helpen om vertraging te voorkomen, zegt Gerritsen. Door openbare ruimte vrij te houden voor de bouw van transformatorhuisjes en vergunningen zo snel mogelijk te verlenen.

Creatief zijn

In Barneveld hoeft netbeheerder Liander bijvoorbeeld geen vergunning meer aan te vragen voor het verzwaren van middenspanningshuisjes. Inwoners kunnen daardoor geen bezwaar aantekenen. Dit leidt tot minder vertraging.

"Er zijn dus best wel dingen die je kan doen als gemeente", zegt Jolanda de Heer-Verheij, wethouder energie namens de ChristenUnie. "Al is het natuurlijk ook zo dat er elders grote stappen gezet moeten worden." Voor echt meer ruimte op het net is Barneveld afhankelijk van de bouw van een stroomstation bij Breukelen, hemelsbreed 40 kilometer verderop. Dat station laat nog jaren op zich wachten.

Geen stekkerauto, maar diesel

Tot die tijd moeten gemeenten de ruimte die er nog wel is, zo slim mogelijk gebruiken. Ook dit is terug te zien in de partijprogramma's. Zo pleit de SGP ervoor nieuwe huizen zo zuinig mogelijk te laten omspringen met de ruimte op het stroomnet. Door bijvoorbeeld te bouwen met onder meer zonnepanelen, goede isolatie en buurtbatterijen.

Ook probeert de gemeente Barneveld met eigen beleid de drukte op het stroomnet in ieder geval niet nog erger te maken. "We hebben bij ons gemeentelijk vastgoed en wagenpark gekeken hoe we daar 'netbewuster' mee om kunnen gaan", zegt wethouder De Heer-Verheij. De gemeente koos daarom niet voor elektrische auto's maar voor diesels. Bestaande gebouwen worden weliswaar klaargemaakt voor een toekomst zonder gas maar waar het niet anders kan, blijft de aansluiting voorlopig.

Onder de landelijke regels krijgen bijvoorbeeld huizen en scholen nog voorrang. Bedrijven staan al langer helemaal achteraan in de rij voor een aansluiting. Dat wringt zeker in Barneveld, waar veel behoefte is aan ruimte voor bedrijven. Voor de uitbreiding van bedrijventerrein Harselaar wordt gewerkt aan een eigen energiesysteem, met onder meer zonne-energie, reuzebatterijen en (bio)gas.

Wethouder De Heer-Verheij legt het liefst de nadruk op wat wel kan. "Barneveld is een beetje het Rotterdam van de Veluwe. Gewoon de schouders eronder." Maar ook zij ziet dat je tegen grenzen aanloopt. Ze wil dan ook op korte termijn initiatief van de landelijke overheid. Die kan regels schrappen die in de weg zitten. En het nieuwe kabinet heeft een crisiswet aangekondigd voor het overvolle stroomnet.

Toch lijken de problemen op de korte termijn vooral erger te worden. Netbeheerders Stedin en Enexis meldden afgelopen week dat ondanks de enorme investeringen in het stroomnet de krapte nog steeds toeneemt.

"Uiteindelijk hebben alle gemeenten hiermee te dealen", zegt onderzoeker Martijn Gerritsen. "Maar het is de vraag of elke gemeente wel de middelen en capaciteit heeft met dit vraagstuk om te gaan."

Nederland stuurt het luchtverdedigings- en commandofregat Zr. Ms. Evertsen naar het oosten van de Middellandse Zee om mee te helpen met het beschermen van landen in de regio tegen Iraanse aanvallen. Dat schrijft het kabinet in een brief aan de Tweede Kamer. Frankrijk heeft om deze hulp gevraagd. De afgelopen dagen zijn er afspraken gemaakt over de details van de opdracht.

De ministers Berendsen (Buitenlandse Zaken) en Yesilgöz (Defensie) melden dat de Evertsen zal worden ingezet om landen als EU-partner Cyprus en NAVO-bondgenoot Turkije te beschermen. Die liggen binnen schootsafstand van Iran of aan dat land gelieerde strijdgroepen. Vorige week zondag werd een Britse legerbasis op Cyprus geraakt door een drone, waarschijnlijk uit Libanon.

In een toelichting benadrukt Yesilgöz dat het om een "defensieve inzet" gaat, die vooral bedoeld is als afschrikking. "Om te laten zien: dit is ons grondgebied en wij helpen onze bondgenoten." Toch is het volgens haar geen risicovrije operatie. "Maar onze mensen zijn hiervoor getraind."

Naast het beschermen van grondgebied van bondgenoten behoort ook de beveiliging van andere marineschepen in het gebied tot het takenpakket. Daarbij gaat het vooral om het Franse vliegdekschip Charles de Gaulle en bijbehorende vaartuigen.

Het Nederlandse fregat was al met de Charles de Gaulle op trainingsmissie in de Oostzee. Het kabinet besloot vorige week om het marineschip met de Fransen te laten meevaren richting de Middellandse Zee en ondertussen de precieze opdracht te bespreken. Inmiddels zijn de schepen al bij Malta.

Drones vroeg detecteren

De Zijner Majesteits Evertsen is een luchtverdedigings- en commandofregat. Dat betekent dat het schip gemaakt is om een hele vloot te beschermen tegen dreigingen vanaf zee en vanuit de lucht, zowel door vliegtuigen als raketten. Daarnaast kan een complete staf vanaf het schip een marine-operatie aansturen. De Nederlandse marine heeft vier van dit soort schepen.

Het Nederlandse fregat kan dankzij speciale apparatuur dreigingen vanuit de lucht, zoals drones, heel vroeg detecteren. Er kan dan snel gewaarschuwd worden waar het projectiel gaat neerkomen. Ook kan de Evertsen zelf de drones uit de lucht schieten. Op het marineschip werken zo'n 170 mensen.

Het kabinet noemt de bijdrage "een beperkte inzet van defensieve aard". De inzet duurt in beginsel een paar weken, tot begin april. Op tactisch niveau ligt het commando bij het Franse vliegdekschip, maar uiteindelijk heeft de Nederlandse militaire leiding het laatste woord over de inzet van de Evertsen.

Mogelijk meer dreiging naar Nederland

In de brief aan de Tweede Kamer gaan de ministers ook in op de eventuele gevolgen van deelname voor onze eigen veiligheid. Die zullen beperkt blijven, is hun inschatting, al blijven er risico's. "Het is wel voorstelbaar dat een Nederlandse militaire inzet in de regio het militaire dreigingsprofiel richting ons land verhoogt", schrijven ze.

Het zou ertoe kunnen leiden dat Nederland of Nederlandse belangen in het buitenland eerder het doelwit worden van terroristische aanslagen, maar de verwachting is dat Iran en zijn bondgenoten in eerste instantie Amerikaanse of Israëlische doelwitten zullen kiezen.

Onvoldoende inlichtingen

Over een andere uitzending van een Nederland fregat verscheen vorige week een rapport met daarin onder meer kritiek op de internationale afspraken. Twee jaar geleden leverde het luchtverdedigings- en commandofregat Zr. Ms. Tromp een bijdrage aan een militaire operatie in de Rode Zee om schepen te beschermen tegen aanvallen van de Houthi's.

Uit de evaluatie die minister Berendsen naar de Kamer heeft gestuurd, blijkt onder meer dat de internationale doelstellingen ambitieuzer waren dan die van Nederland. Ook was er geen goede commandostructuur en ontbrak het aan voldoende inlichtingen.

Het is nu tien dagen geleden dat de oorlog in het Midden-Oosten begon, met bombardementen van de VS en Israël op Iran. Inmiddels zijn meerdere landen in de Golfregio aangevallen door Iraanse drones. Ook Turkije, een NAVO-land, heeft meerdere keren een Iraanse raket uit hun luchtruim neergehaald. Een luchtmachtbasis in Cyprus, dat een Turks en een Grieks deel heeft, werd geraakt door een drone, vermoedelijk uit Libanon.

Straat van Hormuz

Door de oorlog ligt het scheepvaartverkeer in de Straat van Hormuz, tussen de Perzische Golf en de Golf van Oman, nagenoeg stil. Het is een van de belangrijkste vaarroutes ter wereld voor olie- en gastankers, en dat maakt dat de brandstofprijzen enorm zijn gestegen. Ook in Nederland stijgen de prijzen van diesel en benzine in hoog tempo.

De Zr. Ms. Evertsen is vernoemd naar de Zeeuwse familie Evertsen, die veel zeelui heeft voortgebracht. De bekendste waren de broers Johan en Cornelis, twee bekende kapiteins uit de 17de eeuw.

Een man uit Almelo is veroordeeld tot een gevangenisstraf omdat hij zijn eigen dood in scène wilde zetten. Hij wilde onder een andere naam een nieuw leven beginnen om zo van zijn financiële problemen af te komen, meldt de rechtbank in Zutphen.

De 31-jarige Almeloër deed zich voor als uitvaartondernemer en wilde vorig jaar bij de gemeente Enschede aangifte doen van zijn eigen dood. De gemeente kreeg argwaan toen bleek dat niemand met de genoemde naam bij het crematorium was binnengebracht. Toen hij later zijn eigen overlijdensakte wilde ophalen, herkenden medewerkers hem aan de hand van een foto.

De man wilde zich kort daarna onder een Spaanse naam inschrijven bij de gemeente Zwolle. Hij gebruikte daarvoor een geboorteakte uit Spanje die in het Nederlands was opgesteld en een notariële verklaring van een niet bestaand advocaten- en notariskantoor. Het viel de gemeente op dat de man vloeiend Nederlands sprak zonder accent, terwijl zijn beide ouders Spaans zouden zijn, meldt de rechtbank.

Bedreigingen

De man heeft ook meerdere mensen bedreigd, onder anderen medewerkers van de gemeente Almelo. Hij deed zich volgens de rechtbank voor als zijn eigen maatschappelijk werker en zei dat zijn cliënt alle medewerkers van de gemeente wilde doodschieten met een machinegeweer.

Ook bedreigde de man vorig jaar september een buurvrouw in Doetinchem door te zeggen dat hij een gaspit van het fornuis in zijn woning zou openzetten. Een dag later deed de man dat ook en belde hij zelf de hulpdiensten. Er bleek uiteindelijk geen direct ontploffingsgevaar te zijn.

De rechtbank heeft de man een gevangenisstraf van 120 dagen opgelegd, waarvan 103 dagen voorwaardelijk. De rechter noemt de gebeurtenissen "ernstig". "De bedreigingen hebben bij de betrokkenen veel angst en onrust veroorzaakt."

Bij het bepalen van de straf is er rekening mee gehouden dat de man verminderd toerekeningsvatbaar is. Ook lijdt de Almeloër volgens psychologisch onderzoek aan een ernstige persoonlijkheidsstoornis en moet hij in behandeling om het risico op herhaling te verkleinen.

De directeur van de Oostenrijkse publieke omroep ORF stapt per direct op, nadat een medewerkster hem onlangs had beschuldigd van seksueel wangedrag. Zijn vertrek komt kort voor het Eurovisie Songfestival, dat de omroep organiseert.

Directeur Roland Weismann had van de raad van toezicht een paar dagen de tijd gekregen om zelf op te stappen, wat hij dus heeft gedaan. De omroep bedankt hem voor zijn dertig jaar bij het bedrijf en zegt dat de beschuldigingen grondig en transparant onderzocht moeten worden.

De 57-jarige Weismann was sinds 2022 de hoogste baas van de omroep. De zaken waarvan hij wordt beschuldigd, zouden aan het begin van zijn termijn als directeur hebben plaatsgevonden. Volgens de voorzitter van de raad van toezicht worden de beschuldigingen ondersteund door geluidsopnames en beeldmateriaal.

'Overdreven'

De advocaat van Weismann spreekt van een "overdreven reactie" van de omroep. Hij zegt ook dat hun nog niet is verteld waarvan hij precies wordt beschuldigd. Weismann heeft al wel gezegd dat hij ontkent.

In de zomer zou worden besloten of Weismann een nieuwe termijn als directeur zou krijgen.

Het vertrek van de ORF-baas komt kort voor het Songfestival, dat half mei plaatsvindt. Rond deze editie van het liedjesfestijn was al de nodige controverse; vijf landen, waaronder Nederland, doen niet mee vanwege de deelname van Israël.

ORF is de grootste omroep van Oostenrijk en is zowel op televisie als radio de onbetwiste marktleider in het land. De huidige radiodirecteur, Ingrid Thurnher, zal de leiding van de omroep tijdelijk op zich nemen.

Bij de rechtszaak tegen de afgezette burgemeester van Istanbul werd de toon vandaag gelijk gezet. Ekrem Imamoglu vroeg in de rechtbank in Istanbul het woord, wat de rechters weigerden. Zij beschuldigden Imamoglu er op hun beurt van de procedure te verstoren en verlieten de rechtszaal. De zaak werd pas in de middag hervat.

De aanklacht tegen Imamoglu bestaat uit 4000 pagina's waarin Imamoglu wordt verdacht van 142 criminele daden, waaronder het leiden van een criminele organisatie. Als hij wordt veroordeeld, hangt hem meer dan 2000 jaar cel boven het hoofd. De verdenkingen lijken vooral te leunen op verklaringen van anonieme getuigen, of op verklaringen gegeven in ruil voor strafvermindering. Het wordt door veel mensen gezien als een politiek proces.

Imamoglu, die een jaar geleden werd gearresteerd, is niet de enige die vandaag voor de rechter staat; er worden nog 400 medeverdachten beschuldigd. Onder hen zijn partijmedewerkers van Imamoglu's partij CHP, en een paar vooraanstaande journalisten. De leider van CHP, Özgür Özel, zei dat de rechtszaak een formaliteit is. "De rechters hebben hun oordeel toch al geveld." Naar verwachting zal een definitieve uitspraak nog jaren op zich laten wachten.

Presidentsverkiezingen

Imamoglu is het gezicht van de belangrijkste oppositiepartij van Turkije, CHP, en leek lange tijd de grootste uitdager voor zittend president Erdogan bij de presidentsverkiezingen van 2028.

Hoewel Ankara de hoofdstad is, is Istanbul de economische en culturele motor van het land. 'Wie Istanbul wint, wint Turkije', wordt vaak rondom verkiezingen gezegd. Imamoglu zegt zelf te zijn gearresteerd omdat hij tot drie keer toe de meerderheid van de stemmen kreeg in Istanbul, terwijl de AKP van Erdogan daar de grootste was.

Het komt president Erdogan niet slecht uit dat de populaire burgemeester is uitgeschakeld. Volgens de grondwet mag Erdogan, die al 23 jaar aan de macht is in Turkije, zich niet opnieuw verkiesbaar stellen, behalve als er vervroegde verkiezingen worden uitgeschreven of de grondwet wordt veranderd. Tegenstanders gaan ervanuit dat Erdogan voor een van die routes zal kiezen.

Turkije-correspondent Gulsah Ercetin:

"Zowel de CHP als mensenrechtenorganisaties noemen dit een politiek proces. Zij zien het als een poging om de grootste oppositiepartij en de tegenkandidaat van Erdogan buitenspel te zetten. Veel mensen die terechtstaan zijn gelieerd aan de CHP.

Deze zaak leeft enorm in de Turkse samenleving. Een paar weken geleden werd de openbaar aanklager na de vervolging van Imamoglu door president Erdogan benoemd als minister van Justitie. Dat leidde zelfs nog tot een vechtpartij in het Turkse parlement."

Het proces maakt veel los in Turkije. Vandaag stonden er mensen bij de rechtbank te demonstreren. Vorig jaar maart leidde de arrestatie van Erdogans rivaal tot de grootste straatprotesten in Turkije in tien jaar tijd. Critici noemen het monsterproces een campagne tegen de oppositie. De Turkse overheid ontkent dat stellig.

Eerlijk proces

Imamoglu gelooft zelf niet dat hij een eerlijk proces krijgt. Hij mag in de gevangenis geen gebruik maken van het internet en kan daardoor zijn eigen dossier maar beperkt inzien.

Ook Human Rights Watch en Amnesty International spreken hun bedenkingen uit. "Er zijn honderdduizenden pagina's aan bewijsmateriaal ingediend voor dit massaproces, waardoor het voor de verdachten [...] vrijwel onmogelijk is om een effectieve verdediging op te bouwen. Deze vervolging heeft alle kenmerken van een poging om politieke tegenstanders van de regering te intimideren en bredere kritiek in het land het zwijgen op te leggen", schrijft Amnesty.

De gemeente Hardenberg legt het Centraal Orgaan opvang asielzoekers (COA) een zogeheten last onder dwangsom op. Ze wil daarmee afdwingen dat het asielzoekerscentrum en een tijdelijke noodopvanglocatie dichtgaan. Beide zouden uiterlijk gisteren gesloten moeten zijn, maar het COA slaagt er niet in voor iedereen een andere plek te vinden.

Het college van burgemeester en wethouders wijst erop dat de afspraak was dat het azc maximaal tien jaar zou blijven. Dat betekent dat het gisteren had moeten sluiten. De gemeente zegt dat er nu geen geldige omgevingsvergunning meer is.

Als het COA er niet in slaagt de asielzoekers te verhuizen en de locaties te sluiten, moet het een dwangsom van 70.000 euro per dag betalen voor het azc en 11.000 euro voor de andere opvanglocatie. Bij een last onder dwangsom krijgt het COA nog wel de kans om te motiveren waarom de locaties nog niet zijn gesloten.

Duidelijkheid

Hardenberg schrijft in een verklaring dat het het liefst direct een dwangsom had opgelegd, maar de gemeente zegt de procedures te volgen. Wethouder Mussche benadrukt dat het COA zijn verantwoordelijkheid moet nemen. "Voor iedereen is dit een onzekere situatie. Juist daarom is het belangrijk dat er snel duidelijkheid komt en dat de afspraken worden nagekomen."

In het azc zaten tot voor kort 700 mensen. Het COA meldde vorige week al dat het waarschijnlijk niet zou lukken om tijdig voor iedereen een andere plek te vinden. Om te voorkomen dat de asielzoekers op straat belanden, moet het azc nog openblijven, aldus het COA. De organisatie wijst erop dat de bezetting in andere opvanglocaties "op ruim 103 procent" ligt en dat er dus geen ruimte is voor de asielzoekers uit Hardenberg

Spanning onder bewoners

RTV Oost meldt dat er volgens betrokkenen nog zo'n 600 mensen in het azc en de noodopvang verblijven. Er zouden slechts mondjesmaat plekken worden gevonden voor bewoners.

De onzekerheid leidt tot onrust onder bewoners van het azc, vertelt Anne van den Hoek van stichting InBeeld tegen RTV Oost. Zij organiseert activiteiten zoals Nederlandse les in het azc. "Ik had gisteren huilende vrouwen met kleine kinderen die vroegen: waar moeten we naartoe?"

Volgens Van den Hoek zijn sommige bewoners ook bang voor reacties uit de omgeving. Afgelopen weekend kwamen volgens haar tientallen mensen naar het azc na een oproep op sociale media. De politie en beveiliging grepen in om de rust te bewaren. "De mensen hier zijn bang dat ze er met geweld uit worden gehaald. Dat is best heftig."

Het Rotterdamse klimaatcentrum GCA dreigt failliet te gaan. Het centrum werd bijna tien jaar geleden nog met veel bombarie naar Rotterdam gehaald, maar zit in de financiële problemen doordat onder meer Nederland en het Verenigd Koninkrijk de financiering van het centrum hebben stopgezet.

Directeur Patrick Verkooijen heeft vandaag zijn ontslag aangekondigd. Ook voormalig VN-secretaris-generaal Ban Ki-moon, die jarenlang optrad als een van de gezichten van de organisatie, vertrekt bij het klimaatcentrum. Verkooijen wordt vervangen door Ameenah Gurib Fakim, oud-president van Mauritius, en door Rindra Rabarinirinarison, die voorheen minister van Economie en Financiën was in Madagaskar.

Uit documenten die de NOS heeft ingezien, blijkt dat zeker 20 van de 65 medewerkers ontslag boven het hoofd hangt. Maar daarmee zijn de financiële zorgen nog niet weg. In de stukken wordt zelfs gesproken over het geheel opheffen van het centrum als er op korte termijn geen fondsen worden binnengehaald. De NOS heeft daarover vragen gesteld aan GCA, maar het centrum wil daarop niet inhoudelijk reageren.

Onderzoek naar GCA

De NOS berichtte in september en oktober dat het Global Center on Adaptation onder directeur Patrick Verkooijen een omstreden reputatie opbouwde. Het centrum overdreef de eigen prestaties om subsidiegeld binnen te halen, werknemers vertrokken vaak al snel vanwege een verziekte sfeer en Verkooijen bejubelde in het bijzijn van koning Willem-Alexander en Máxima de autoritaire Keniaanse leider Ruto op een staatsbanket in Kenia.

Het Global Center on Adaptation helpt vanuit Rotterdam vooral Afrikaanse landen om zich aan te passen aan klimaatverandering. Aan het centrum zijn onder anderen oud-premier Jan Peter Balkenende en topbestuurder Feike Sijbesma verbonden. Of de wijzigingen in de top van het centrum gevolgen hebben voor hun functie, is niet bekendgemaakt.

Nederland haalde het centrum in 2018 binnen. Grote namen als Ban Ki-moon en Microsoft-oprichter Bill Gates hielpen bij de oprichting. In de jaren daarna waren bijvoorbeeld koning Willem-Alexander, toenmalig premier Rutte en toenmalig Eurocommissaris Timmermans aanwezig bij evenementen die door het centrum werden georganiseerd.

Het lukt GCA tot nu toe niet om het financiële gat dat Nederland en het VK achterlaten te vullen. Directeur Verkooijen stelde eerder dat Denemarken en Noorwegen hebben toegezegd om nog meer geld in GCA te steken. Sindsdien hebben beide landen dat tegenover de NOS ontkend.

In de interne documenten is te lezen dat er voor dit jaar nog slechts 4 miljoen dollar aan fondsen is toegezegd. In 2024 was dat nog ruim vijf keer zo veel. Van die 4 miljoen dollar is slechts 1,4 miljoen beschikbaar voor het betalen van lonen, terwijl jaarlijks 6 miljoen nodig is. Daarom wordt al met het UWV gesproken over gedwongen ontslagen.

Terugverhuizen

Voor veel medewerkers betekent ontslag niet alleen het verlies van hun werk. Een groot deel is van over de hele wereld door GCA naar Nederland gehaald en hun werkvisum is ook afhankelijk van hun werkgever. Verlies van hun werk kan betekenen dat ze met gezinnen terug moeten verhuizen.

GCA beschrijft in een intern document dat de organisatie begrijpt dat medewerkers hulp nodig hebben met hun werkvisum en vergelijkbare documenten. "Echter, gegeven de huidige financiële beperkingen, is de organisatie niet in staat om ondersteuning op dit niveau te bieden aan medewerkers", staat er.

Vertrek naar Kenia

Als de komende maanden geen nieuwe fondsen worden gevonden, kan GCA niet verder, zo is in de documenten te lezen. Dat zou pijnlijk zijn voor de gemeente Rotterdam. Die stad won in 2017 de strijd tussen verschillende Nederlandse steden om GCA binnen te halen en zegde het centrum toe om tot zeker 2030 te betalen voor de huisvesting in een drijvend kantoor in de stad. Voor eind mei moet duidelijk zijn of GCA daar blijft.

Toen in september duidelijk werd dat Nederland de steun voor GCA zou stoppen, waarschuwden topdiplomaat Ban Ki-moon en directeur Verkooijen dat ze zich genoodzaakt voelden om in dat geval Nederland te verlaten. Juist Kenia, waar Verkooijen door president Ruto is aangesteld als hoogste bestuurder van de Universiteit van Nairobi, zou de nieuwe thuishaven worden.

GCA liet de NOS vorige week nog weten dat de plannen voor de verhuizing ongewijzigd zijn. In interne documenten valt echter te lezen dat de bouw en de opening van dat hoofdkwartier op de lange baan zijn geschoven in verband met de nijpende financiële situatie van GCA.

Nu een groot tekort aan opvangplekken dreigt en er tienduizenden extra asielplekken nodig zijn doet minister Van den Brink (CDA) van Asiel en Migratie een oproep aan alle Nederlandse gemeenten om solidair te zijn en mee te helpen. Op werkbezoek in Ter Apel onderstreepte hij nog eens dat het nieuwe kabinet de spreidingswet in stand houdt en zal handhaven.

In Ter Apel, waar de meeste asielzoekers zich melden bij het aanmeldcentrum, is regelmatig overlast en zijn er geregeld te veel aanmelders in verhouding tot het aantal plekken. De spreidingswet moet daarbij gaan helpen, denkt Van den Brink.

Op vragen over lokale partijen die in de campagne voor de gemeenteraadsverkiezingen beloven dat er in hun gemeente geen asielopvang komt, zegt de nieuwe asielminister dat hij "het lokale debat hier niet voor de camera gaat voeren". Hij zegt samen met provincies en gemeenten aan de slag te gaan om de problemen aan te pakken.

Op de vraag of lokale partijen in gemeentes dan iets beloven dat ze niet kunnen waarmaken, zegt Van den Brink niet in te willen gaan. "Ik ga me verhouden tot de gemeentebesturen na 18 maart", als na de lokale verkiezingen nieuwe colleges worden gevormd. "De wet geldt", benadrukte Van den Brink daarbij.

'Tienduizenden plekken tekort'

Uit een raming die Van den Brink onlangs verstuurde blijkt dat gemeenten voor een grote opgave staan: er moeten tienduizenden opvangplekken bij komen.

Volgens de nieuwe asielminister is het tekort "niet snel opgelost en zijn er geen gemakkelijke oplossingen", maar zet het nieuwe kabinet in op én de instroom beperken én de opvang met "fatsoenlijke financiering" verbeteren. Om de overlast in aanmeldcentrum Ter Apel te beperken, moeten meer gemeenten bijdragen aan de oplossing, vindt Van den Brink.

Uit de raming blijkt dat er voor halverwege 2027 wordt verwacht dat Nederland 88.000 opvangplekken nodig heeft. Begin deze maand waren er ongeveer 77.500 plekken voor asielzoekers, maar ruim 27.000 daarvan vervallen de komende tijd. Dat betekent dat er de komende anderhalf jaar bijna 38.000 plekken moeten worden gerealiseerd. Van den Brink spreekt van een "grote opgave".

Extra toezicht

Om de overlast rond Ter Apel tegen te gaan stelt het kabinet zes extra buitengewoon opsporingsambtenaren (boa's), een teamleider en acht toezichthouders aan. Ze gaan vooral aan de slag in centrum van Emmen, het stationsgebied en in Nieuw-Weerdinge, deel van de gemeente Emmen.

De gemeente Westerwolde had om extra veiligheidsmiddelen gevraagd. Vorig jaar werd besloten de kaartjes voor de pendelbus naar Ter Apel tijdelijk gratis te maken omdat de buschauffeurs te veel overlast ondervonden.

Voormalig minister Keijzer vond dat dat niet kon, waarop de gemeentes aangaven graag met haar in gesprek te gaan over hoe het veiliger te krijgen.

Van den Brink kwam vandaag met de aankondiging dat er extra veiligheidsmaatregelen komen.

Burgemeester Velema van Westerwolde is blij met de toezeggingen. "Dit kabinet spreekt zich nadrukkelijker uit, het is goed dat geluid te horen. Het zal allemaal wel nog moeten blijken." Maar met de dubbele boodschap van de instroom beperken en meer inzetten op de opvang komt er volgens hem hopelijk meer rust en ruimte.

Vier gespecialiseerde zorgvilla's voor zeer zieke en gehandicapte kinderen blijven open "zolang de zorg voor hen nog niet goed is geregeld". Dat heeft minister Sterk (Langdurige Zorg) gezegd tijdens het commissiedebat over de gehandicaptenzorg.

Villa ExpertCare maakte in januari bekend de zorgvilla's te sluiten, omdat de vergoeding volgens het bedrijf niet toereikend is. Dat was een grote schok voor de kinderen en hun ouders, omdat zij een nieuwe plek moeten zoeken. Die plekken zijn zeer schaars.

De zorgorganisatie had al wel beloofd open te blijven totdat alle kinderen een nieuwe plek hadden. Maar ouders waren bang dat het personeel door de sluiting alvast een nieuwe baan zou zoeken, waardoor de kinderen alsnog geen zorg kregen. Ook dat probleem wordt volgens de minister opgevangen.

Kosten drukken in de gehandicaptenzorg

Dat de tarieven in de gehandicaptenzorg onder druk staan, zorgde in het debat voor ongemak bij alle politieke partijen. Vanaf volgend jaar gaan er nieuwe kostenbesparingen in, die nog stammen uit het vierde kabinet-Rutte en kabinet-Schoof. Daardoor moet de gehandicaptenzorg het volgend jaar met 158 miljoen euro minder doen dan verwacht.

Het kabinet-Jetten wil nog eens extra de kosten drukken, onder meer door minder geld voor de langdurige zorg vrij te maken. Wat daarvan de gevolgen zijn voor de gehandicaptenzorg, is nog onduidelijk. Minister Sterk wijst er wel op dat de financiële positie van veel zorgorganisaties gezond is.

Onzekerheid bij gehandicapten

De kostenbesparende maatregelen leiden tot boze reacties bij Kamerleden. Zij wijzen erop dat voor gehandicapten de bezuinigingen zich opstapelen. Als alle plannen van de coalitie doorgaan, moeten zij bijvoorbeeld ook meer eigen risico betalen.

"Mensen weten niet wat dit gaat betekenen, terwijl er al zoveel onzekerheid is", zegt ChristenUnie-fractievoorzitter Bikker. "Het gaat niet goed in de zorg, dus bezuinigen we", zegt SP-Kamerlid Dobbe. "Alsof dat het beter maakt. Die logica klopt voor geen meter."

Daar sluit Kamerlid Ten Hove van Groep Markuszower zich bij aan. "Bezuinigen op de meest kwetsbare mensen is niet normaal. Wie dat niet kan inzien, heeft wat mij betreft zelf een beperking."

D66-Kamerlid Synhaeve gaf toe "niet enthousiast" te zijn over de geplande kortingen. Tegelijkertijd ziet ze het drukken van de kosten wel als oplossing voor het grote personeelstekort. "Juist door keuzes maken willen we dat de zorg toegankelijk blijft voor de mensen die het het hardst nodig hebben", zei ze.

Geen plek voor rolstoelen in zaal

Kamerleden waren ook kritisch over de plannen van het nieuwe kabinet voor de uitvoering van het VN-mensenrechtenverdrag Handicap. Zo lijkt het erop dat het nieuwe kabinet geen geld opzij legt om de toegang tot bijvoorbeeld gebouwen te verbeteren.

Het was dan ook tekenend dat meerdere bezoekers van de Tweede Kamer het commissiedebat niet in de zaal konden zien, omdat er niet genoeg ruime plekken waren voor hun rolstoel. Zij moesten daarom het debat buiten volgen.

"Het doet pijn dat de Kamer niet zo inclusief is", zei Bikker. "Dat zij niet gewoon kunnen aanschuiven en het debat hier kunnen volgen."

Meerdere mensen waren ook in het rood gekomen, een verwijzing naar de opvallend rode outfit die minister Sterk (Langdurige Zorg) droeg tijdens de bordesfoto. Op die manier vroegen ze aandacht voor de situatie in de gehandicaptenzorg.

Terwijl de oorlog in Iran z'n tweede week ingaat, blijft het moeilijk om contact te krijgen met Iraniërs die daar wonen. Met veel moeite lukte het de redactie van Nieuwsuur toch om verschillende mensen te spreken. Redacteur Kaja Bouman vertelt hoe de vreugde die aanvankelijk bij sommige Iraniërs nog heerste, is verdwenen. "De realiteit van de oorlog daalt nu in."

Een Iraanse journalist, die anoniem wil blijven, zegt: "Ik hoop dat iedereen begrijpt dat er een zeer ernstige oorlog gaande is, die veel ernstiger is dan de Twaalfdaagse Oorlog die hier eerder werd gevoerd. Laten we hopen dat deze oorlog snel eindigt. Oorlog geeft geen vreugde, en ik zie ook nergens blijdschap."

Burgemeester Paul Depla van Breda gaat aangifte doen van doodsbedreiging door supporters van voetbalclub NAC Breda. Supporters kwamen gisteren voorafgaand aan de thuiswedstrijd tegen Feyenoord bij elkaar in een café. Op een spandoek dat buiten het café hing stond de tekst 'Depla Dood'.

De harde kern van de club wilde voorafgaand aan de wedstrijd in de kroeg een zogenoemde preparty organiseren. De gemeente Breda waarschuwde de eigenaren van de kroeg dat er bij ongeregeldheden consequenties zouden volgen. De eigenaren besloten daarop een streep door het plan te zetten.

Een groep NAC-supporters besloot gisteren alsnog samen te komen bij het café aan de Meidoornstraat, schrijft Omroep Brabant. Aan de voorgevel van de kroeg hing korte tijd een spandoek met de doodsbedreiging die aan Depla was gericht.

"De gemeente is door de politie op de hoogte gebracht van het spandoek", zegt een woordvoerder van de gemeente. "De burgemeester gaat aangifte doen, ook tegen het café dat het spandoek heeft laten ophangen."

Flitscamera's bij overwegen werken goed in de strijd tegen gevaarlijk gedrag rond het spoor. Dat concludeert ProRail na twee jaar gebruik van de camera's. Volgens de spoorbeheerder gaat het om "spectaculaire resultaten".

Bij sommige spoorwegovergangen is het aantal overtredingen door mensen die nog snel onder de dalende slagbomen doorglippen met 60 procent gedaald. Toch zijn er nog altijd weggebruikers die de regels negeren.

Het negeren van rode knipperlichten en dalende overwegbomen is volgens ProRail een belangrijke oorzaak van gevaarlijke situaties voor zowel wegverkeer als treinverkeer. De camera's richten zich op dit gedrag.

Alle voertuigen met een kenteken die door rood rijden worden geflitst en beboet. Sinds 2026 is een boete voor een auto of vrachtwagen 320 euro. Voor brom- en snorfietsers is het 220 euro.

Patroon in gedrag

ProRail ziet een herkenbaar patroon in de aanpassing van het gedrag van weggebruikers. In de eerste maanden na plaatsing van camera's daalt het aantal overtredingen relatief snel. Daarna vlakt die daling af.

Volgens ProRail lijkt het op een leercurve: weggebruikers passen hun gedrag aan en wennen aan de nieuwe situatie. Tegelijkertijd is niet op alle plekken al een duidelijke daling zichtbaar.

De camera's staan bij 32 risicovolle spoorwegovergangen. Het ministerie van Infrastructuur en Waterstaat heeft geld beschikbaar gesteld om in totaal 44 overwegen van flitscamera's te voorzien. De resterende twaalf moeten volgens ProRail uiterlijk halverwege 2027 worden geplaatst.

Tussen de ingebruikname van de flitscamera's in februari 2024 en eind 2025 hebben ongeveer 33.000 weggebruikers een overtreding begaan. "Een schrikbarend aantal" dat volgens ProRail flink naar beneden moet. "Breng jezelf en anderen niet in gevaar en wacht wanneer de overweglampen knipperen en de overwegbomen dalen."

De politie heeft een man aangehouden voor twee verkrachtingen in een woning in Goudswaard, in Zuid-Holland. Hij wordt ervan verdacht dat hij de woning van de slachtoffers is binnengedrongen en daar een zedenmisdrijf heeft gepleegd. Dat zou afgelopen weekend zijn gebeurd, in de nacht van 7 op 8 maart.

De verdachte is een 29-jarige man uit Spijkenisse. Hij werd vannacht aangehouden in Lelystad. De politie kreeg vannacht een inbraakmelding bij een industrieterrein, waar ze hem aanhielden. Agenten kwamen er daarna achter dat de man gesignaleerd stond voor het zedenmisdrijf in Goudswaard.

De man is overgedragen aan de politie-eenheid Rotterdam die de zaak verder oppakt. Gisteren werd er bij de woning in Goudswaard sporenonderzoek en buurtonderzoek gedaan. Ook zijn er camerabeelden bekeken, waarna de signalering werd uitgezet voor de verdachte.

Zwitserse aanklagers nemen in het onderzoek naar de dodelijke brand in skioord Crans-Montana ook de rol van de burgemeester onder de loep. Hij en vier andere lokale functionarissen worden verdacht van dood door schuld.

Bij de dodelijke brand in de nieuwjaarsnacht vielen 41 doden, voornamelijk tieners. Meer dan honderd mensen raakten gewond, van wie een groot deel nog altijd met brandwonden in het ziekenhuis of een revalidatiekliniek ligt.

Het strafrechtelijk onderzoek richtte zich in eerste instantie op de Franse eigenaren van de ondergrondse bar, Jacques en Jessica Moretti. Justitie verdenkt ook hen van dood door schuld.

Geen inspecties

Burgemeester Feraud moet zich volgende maand melden voor verhoor. In januari had hij al gezegd dat de bar al jarenlang niet meer was geïnspecteerd.

De brand ontstond doordat brandende sterretjes in flessen in aanraking kwamen met de licht ontvlambare plafondisolatie. Het vuur verspreidde zich razendsnel en veel cafégangers konden niet op tijd wegkomen.

Schadevergoeding

Eind februari werd bekend dat de Zwitserse overheid alle slachtoffers van de cafébrand een schadevergoeding betaalt. Het komt neer op een kleine 55.000 euro. Bij de overleden slachtoffers gaat het geld naar hun nabestaanden.

De tegemoetkoming is bedoeld als blijk van medeleven en om de eerste financiële klappen op te vangen, verklaarde de Zwitserse minister van Justitie. In totaal wordt voor 156 slachtoffers zo'n 8,5 miljoen euro uitgetrokken.

De Iraanse meisjesschool die op de eerste dag van de Iran-oorlog werd aangevallen in de stad Minab, werd vermoedelijk getroffen door een Amerikaanse raket. Die conclusie trekt onderzoekscollectief Bellingcat na het bestuderen van nieuwe beelden die zijn vrijgegeven door het Iraanse Mehr News.

Op de beelden, die enkele seconden duren, is te zien dat een raket een complex raakt van de Iraanse Islamitische Revolutionaire Garde, de elite-eenheid die een cruciale rol speelt in de oorlog. Iets rechts van de inslag, die gepaard gaat met zwarte rook, is te zien dat al rook en stof hangt. Dat is de meisjesschool.

Voor Bellingcat analyseerde Trevor Ball, een voormalige wapenexpert bij het Amerikaanse leger, de beelden. Hij gaat ervan uit dat op de beelden een Tomahawk-raket te zien is, die in de oorlog voor zover bekend alleen door de VS kan worden ingezet. Beelden van fragmenten van de munitie op de grond zijn er niet.

Ook The New York Times heeft de beelden geverifieerd en komt tot de conclusie dat er een Tomahawk-raket is ingezet bij de aanval. Er zouden bij de aanval zeker 168 mensen zijn omgekomen, onder wie veel kinderen.

Uit onderzoek van de NOS bleek eerder al dat in Minab sprake was van een gecoördineerde aanval op een militair doelwit, waarbij ook de meisjesschool werd geraakt. Die school ligt pal naast het complex van de Revolutionaire Garde. Er staat sinds 2016 een muur tussen het terrein van de school en de garde; daarvoor maakte het schoolgebouw deel uit van het militaire terrein.

Peter Wijninga, defensie-expert verbonden aan het Haags Centrum voor Strategische Studies, heeft de beelden en analyse van Bellingcat vandaag op verzoek van de NOS bekeken. Hij durft "niet met honderd procent zekerheid" te zeggen dat het gaat om een Tomahawk-raket. Tegelijkertijd acht hij het scenario dat de Amerikanen de aanval hebben uitgevoerd het waarschijnlijkst.

Met Bellingcat en The New York Times gaat Wijninga ervan uit dat alleen de Amerikanen beschikken over Tomahawks, Israël en Iran niet. Puur afgaande op de beelden van de raket die te zien is op de beelden van Mehr News zegt hij: "Bij de meeste Iraanse kruisvluchtwapens is de straalmotor in de gondel onder de romp gebouwd. Dan krijg je een heel ander silhouet dan te zien is."

Toch is er mogelijk één uitzondering, zegt Wijninga. "Er is één type Iraans kruisvluchtwapen waarbij dat niet het geval is. Die heeft alleen een luchtinlaat, die doorloopt in de romp naar de straalmotor is ingebouwd. Dan krijg je hetzelfde silhouet als op de wat vage beelden."

Verouderde informatie?

Dat scenario acht Wijninga wel onwaarschijnlijk. "Ik acht het Iraanse regime tot veel in staat, maar het zou wel heel cynisch en moorddadig zijn als ze die raket zelf hebben afgevuurd op de school."

"Ik ga ervan uit dat er bij de Amerikanen iets fout is gegaan, in technische zin of qua planning. Mogelijk hebben ze zich gebaseerd op sterk verouderde informatie, dat ze dachten dat het schoolgebouw nog deel uitmaakte van het militair complex."

Wijninga benadrukt dat Tomahawks uiterst precies hun doel kunnen raken, "mits het goed werkt". "Iraniërs proberen ook voortdurend navigatiewapens te verstoren, gps-blockers kunnen ook een keer hun uitwerking hebben gehad. Dat weten we allemaal niet, het is gissen."

Trump wees naar Iran

President Trump zei dit weekend dat hij, afgaande op wat hij heeft gezien, vermoedt dat Iran achter de aanval op de school zit. "Ze zijn heel onnauwkeurig, zoals je weet, met hun munitie." Defensie-minister Hegseth zei erbij dat het Pentagon het onderzoekt. "Maar de enige partij die burgers tot doelwit maakt is Iran."

Functionarissen van het Pentagon hebben al wel erkend dat de VS op die dag aanvallen in de regio heeft uitgevoerd. Generaal Dan Caine, de hoogste Amerikaanse militair, zei woensdag dat de Amerikanen op het moment van de aanval in Minab bezig waren met aanvallen in Zuid-Iran. Op een kaart die hij liet zien was ook Minab te zien, zonder dat die plaats expliciet werd genoemd.

Op maandag 2 maart zei Caine dat de Amerikaanse marine bij de eerste aanvallen op Iran Tomahawks had ingezet.

In het Zuid-Limburgse Hoensbroek zijn vanochtend tachtig woningen ontruimd na een gaslek. Dat meldt de Veiligheidsregio Zuid-Limburg. Het lek ontstond bij werkzaamheden. Rond 12.30 uur konden bewoners weer terug naar huis.

Volgens de Veiligheidsregio werd de brandweer rond 09.15 uur gealarmeerd over de gaslekkage. Twee flats en een aantal nabije panden aan de Hermesweg zijn uit voorzorg ontruimd. Een basisschool in de buurt lag net buiten de ontruimingszone.

Bewoners opgevangen

De straat was enkele uren afgezet. Bewoners werden in de buurt opgevangen, schrijft L1 Nieuws.

Rond 11.30 uur was de uitstroom van gas volgens de Veiligheidsregio gestopt. Na metingen van de brandweer mochten de bewoners weer naar huis. Netbeheerder Enexis gaat nu aan de slag met herstelwerkzaamheden.

De verdachte van een femicidezaak in Zwijndrecht is niet bij het hoger beroep in zijn zaak bij de rechtbank in Den Haag verschenen. Volgens het Openbaar Ministerie heeft Minh V. in de gevangenis een scheermes ingeslikt en is hij naar een ziekenhuis afgevoerd.

Het hof had de aanwezigheid van V. in de rechtszaal bevolen. Omdat alle betrokken partijen willen dat het proces geen vertraging oploopt, heeft het hof besloten het beroep ook zonder de verdachte te laten doorgaan, schrijft de regionale omroep Rijnmond. "Voor de nabestaanden weegt dit proces gigantisch zwaar", zei de advocaat-generaal. "Zij willen niets liever dan de afronding van deze zaak."

De 52-jarige V., ook wel bekend onder de bijnaam 'Lucky', schoot in januari 2023 op de parkeerplaats van een winkelcentrum in Zwijndrecht zijn ex-vriendin en haar moeder neer. De ex-vriendin (38) raakte blijvend invalide, haar moeder (66) overleed.

Levenslang

De rechtbank veroordeelde V. in 2024 tot dertig jaar cel, na een eis tot levenslang van de officier van justitie. V. ging in hoger beroep tegen de uitspraak.

Het Openbaar Ministerie eist in het hoger beroep opnieuw levenslang tegen de verdachte. Volgens het OM heeft V. met vooropgezet plan toegeslagen en vertoont de zaak alle kenmerken van femicide. Levenslang is "de enige passende reactie die de maatschappij voorgoed beschermt tegen deze verdachte", zei de advocaat-generaal.

De man kon niet verkroppen dat zijn ex-vriendin de relatie na dertien jaar met hem had beëindigd. Aan de schietpartij ging een periode met onder meer bedreigingen en intimidaties vooraf.

Hongerstaking

Veel mensen waren getuige van de schietpartij bij het winkelcentrum. De verdachte was na de fatale schietpartij bijna vijf weken voortvluchtig voordat hij kon worden aangehouden.

Vorige week verloor V. een kort geding dat hij had aangespannen om overgeplaatst te worden van de afdeling voor intensief toezicht van de gevangenis in Sittard. De man vindt dat regime "onmenselijk" en ging in hongerstaking.

Zijn advocaat wist niets over het inslikken van het scheermes. Over de medische toestand van V. zijn door het OM geen mededelingen gedaan.

We have updated the shim bootloader to version 16.1 for AlmaLinux 9.7 and 10.1, following the same pattern that users will see in RHEL releases. This update includes a change in the UEFI Secure Boot signing key for the aarch64 (ARM64) architecture that our users should be aware of.

What is shim?

For those unfamiliar, shim is an open-source bootloader that acts as a bridge between the UEFI firmware and the operating system during the boot process. It is essential for Secure Boot support, as it verifies the signature of the boot loader before loading the operating system. You can learn more about how AlmaLinux handles Secure Boot in our earlier blog post.

Announcing Btrfs support in AlmaLinux OS 10.1

AlmaLinux OS 10.1 will support the Btrfs filesystem, which has already been available in AlmaLinux OS Kitten since early September.

What is Btrfs?

Btrfs is a modern Copy-on-Write (CoW) filesystem implementing advanced features while also focusing on fault tolerance, repair and easy administration. Among other things, it provides snapshotting, built-in volume management, checksumming for data and metadata, transparent compression and efficient copying via reflinks. These features lead to better performance for most common workloads and stronger resistance against bitrot and other potential issues with the underlying storage medium. Btrfs is already supported by a variety of Linux distributions, and is the default filesystem for several of them, notably Fedora Linux and openSUSE.

We have identified some inconsistencies within our internal guidelines that could potentially call into question the current election. To ensure that we are properly aligning our processes, bylaws, and committee guidelines, we are canceling the current election and rescheduling it for March of 2026.

The inconsistencies

Last week, the membership committee identified a potential problem in the way that we handled the nominations for this election, specifically with regard to who did the nominating. We also identified some problems with how we renewed memberships for existing members earlier this year.

AlmaLinux OS 10 will have the CRB repository turned on by default via an update in AlmaLinux OS 10.0 on 2025-09-09, while AlmaLinux OS Kitten 10 has had it enabled by default since the update on 2025-08-27 (almalinux-kitten-repos-10.0-9.el10.0.1).

As part of our efforts to continue improving the experience for AlmaLinux users, we are enabling the CRB repository by default. This reduces the friction in using software from Fedora Extra Packages from Enterprise Linux (EPEL).

At long last, users of NVIDIA graphics cards can enjoy a drastically improved user experience with AlmaLinux.

AlmaLinux’s NVIDIA support - including Secure Boot

AlmaLinux OS 9 and 10 now ship packages enabling native NVIDIA Open GPU driver support - with Secure Boot. Thanks to ALESCo, the NVIDIA Open GPU Kernel module, and this approved RFC, AlmaLinux 9 and 10 solve many pain points of NVIDIA users by shipping NVIDIA’s open source graphics driver as a kernel module, along with a repository config for many of the common userspace and CUDA components. With AlmaLinux 9 and 10 and the new NVIDIA packages, a few dnf commands are all that stand between users and a fully-integrated NVIDIA experience.

• PostgreSQL

In March, ALESCo approved a proposal to build EPEL packages from Fedora’s source RPMs (SRPMs) to maintain long-term feature parity for our x86_64_v2 support initiative. Last month, these packages became available for AlmaLinux Kitten 10, and today we are happy to announce that x86_64_v2 EPEL support is now available for AlmaLinux 10 Stable as well.

The EPEL package builds for AlmaLinux OS 10 stable are now complete and ready for use!

How It Works

We monitor the EPEL repository for the latest stable packages, grab their SRPMs, and rebuild them using the AlmaLinux Build System. These rebuilt packages are signed with a dedicated GPG key and then released to a dedicated repository.

Yesterday, Qualys published details about a vulnerability discovered in the libblockdev package. Two vulnerabilities were announced, CVE-2025-6018 and CVE-2025-6019. AlmaLinux is not impacted by CVE-2025-6018, but we are impacted by CVE-2025-6019.

Without the impact of CVE-2025-6018 the vulnerability in libblockdev (CVE-2025-6019) is arguably less critical, but it is impactful nonetheless.

The second (CVE-2025-6019) affects libblockdev, is exploitable via the udisks daemon included by default on most Linux distributions, and allows an “allow_active” user to gain full root privileges. Although CVE-2025-6019 on its own requires existing allow_active context, chaining it with CVE-2025-6018 enables a purely unprivileged attacker to achieve full root access.

Update June 18 2025 20:00 UTC: The patches for all verisons have been published into stable repositories. A normal dnf upgrade or dnf upgrade open-vm-tools will pull in the updates.

About a month ago Broadcom (VMWare) released a security advisory for CVE-2025-22247 impacting the open-vm-tools package commonly installed inside of virtual machines on VMWare hypervisors.

VMware Tools contains an insecure file handling vulnerability. VMware has evaluated the severity of this issue to be in the Moderate severity range with a maximum CVSSv3 base score of 6.1.

AlmaLinux provides a variety of cloud images that are now updated to the AlmaLinux OS 9.6 version including:

• Amazon Web Services (AWS)
• Generic Cloud
• OpenNebula
• Microsoft Azure
• Oracle Cloud Infrastructure

Container images are updated to the 9.6 version as well:

• You can get official Docker images and OCI Images from Quay.io. You can also get container images from GitHub packages
• bootc images

Last October, when we announced AlmaLinux OS Kitten, we also announced that we would be providing support for x86_64_v2 chips for the AlmaLinux OS 10 lifecycle.

We know that many users of AlmaLinux rely on Fedora EPEL for tools and packages outside the base set of packages included in AlmaLinux OS releases. Historically, our users have been able to rely on the Fedora project entirely for those packages. However, EPEL builds against RHEL, and with RHEL 10 moving to support only x86_64_v3, EPEL will no longer cover x86_64_v2 use-cases for version 10.

For those who are not aware, AlmaLinux OS is a community-owned operating system. All assets related to the project are owned by The AlmaLinux OS Foundation, a 501(c)(6) nonprofit organization, that is governed by a set of Bylaws, and guided by a volunteer board of directors.

I’m excited to share some great news for users running AlmaLinux OS on Windows Subsystem for Linux (WSL).

You can now install AlmaLinux OS images directly via the WSL CLI tool - no extra configuration and without having to navigate the Microsoft Store interface to install it! This change also makes it possible to install AlmaLinux on Windows Server, where the Store isn’t available.

What’s New?

Previously, installing AlmaLinux on WSL required Microsoft Store. With this update, you can install the needed AlmaLinux OS directly from the CLI tool using a simple command:

AlmaLinux OS Kitten 10 is now available for Raspberry Pi

As you might have already noticed, AlmaLinux OS Kitten 10 is now available for Raspberry Pi! Visit AlmaLinux OS Kitten 10 page for details.

Both the console image and the GNOME image are available, as with previous versions; however, the MBR version has been omitted to reduce development effort. Therefore, only images with a GUID partition table are available in AlmaLinux OS Kitten 10. That means that the Raspberry Pi 3+ will not be supported for AlmaLinux OS 10 or AlmaLinux OS Kitten 10.

Hello everyone! We’ve got ELevate Project updates to share.

The ELevate Project currently follows 3 stages for delivering updates:

• New upgrade paths, features, bug fixes, and new versions of leapp-repository and leapp-data are first introduced in ELevate NG. The AlmaLinux Team, along with the community, tests these enhancements.
• ELevate NG then moves to general Testing, during which it gathers additional data, features, and improvements.
• Once these updates are thoroughly tested and approved, the AlmaLinux Team releases them to ELevate Stable.

Today’s changes are available in ELevate NG and ELevate Testing. We expect them to be released to Stable after the general availability of AlmaLinux OS 10 Stable.

UPDATE March 17th, 2025 - these patches have now been released to production for AlmaLinux users.

The Announcement

On Monday Meta announced a flaw in FreeType versions 2.13.0 and below that can allow remote code execution.

From the announcement:

An out of bounds write exists in FreeType versions 2.13.0 and below (newer versions of FreeType are not vulnerable) when attempting to parse font subglyph structures related to TrueType GX and variable font files. The vulnerable code assigns a signed short value to an unsigned long and then adds a static value causing it to wrap around and allocate too small of a heap buffer. The code then writes up to 6 signed long integers out of bounds relative to this buffer. This may result in arbitrary code execution. This vulnerability may have been exploited in the wild.

Earlier this week Qualys announced two critical vulnerabilities for OpenSSH - CVE-2025-26465 and 2025-26466. We are looking for helping testing the patches for CVE-2025-26465.

The Qualys Threat Research Unit (TRU) has identified two vulnerabilities in OpenSSH. The first, tracked as CVE-2025-26465, allows an active machine-in-the-middle attack on the OpenSSH client when the VerifyHostKeyDNS option is enabled. The second, CVE-2025-26466, affects both the OpenSSH client and server, enabling a pre-authentication denial-of-service attack.

Security researchers at Google, namely Pedro Gallegos, Simon Scannell, and Jasiel Spelman, identified vulnerabilities in both the rsync server and client. These vulnerabilities range from extremely concerning to just annoying, and are at different stages of being patched. This blog post will be updated as patches are released by us.

The Announcement

The server vulnerabilities (CVE-2024-12084 and CVE-2024-12085) can lead to remote code execution (RCE). On the client side, vulnerabilities allow a malicious server to read arbitrary files (CVE-2024-12086), create unsafe symlinks (CVE-2024-12087), and, under certain conditions, overwrite arbitrary files (CVE-2024-12088). Additionally, during the coordinated response to these issues, Aleksei Gorban reported a sixth vulnerability (CVE-2024-12747) related to how the rsync server manages symlinks.

  • Added nfs-utils package to enable built-in support for mounting Amazon Elastic File System (EFS) or any NFS filesystems.

• OpenNebula
  • New langpacks-en package to add en_US.UTF-8 setting it as a default locale.
• Microsoft Azure
  • New langpacks-en package to add en_US.UTF-8 setting it as a default locale.
  • Added sos and tcpdump packages for troubleshooting and log collection tools.

Back in October 2024 AlmaLinux OS Foundation officially introduced AlmaLinux OS Kitten 10. It is designed as a development-focused distribution of AlmaLinux OS, and a stable preview of AlmaLinux OS 10. Today we’re excited to share the latest updates in this project!

This year Buenos Aires became a center of the IT technical community in Latin America with an event which became a beacon for technical enthusiasts, entrepreneurs, students and professionals - Nerdearla, and I was honored to volunteer in this event - presenting AlmaLinux to a crowd that turned out to be massive, diverse, and passionate about open-source technology.

It can be quite interesting to tell you why I eventually decided to become a volunteer at this event. I have a great passion for technology, and a love of the open-source community. I strongly believe in the power of collaboration and cooperation especially between a diverse group of people. AlmaLinux, being a community-driven open-source project, resonates with me deeply, and I wanted to find a way to contribute in any way I could! Even before I got to Nerdearla, I felt the incredible excitement of the intelligent minds coming together to do something new in a creative way, which eventually appears to be a highly-demanded product. And as a newcomer to Argentina, I was tempted to join a new event as well.

Since our inception just a few months ago, there has been a lot of exciting news coming out of ALESCo. Whether you’ve been following along via the minutes, or attending the meetings yourself, or engaging in our chat, we are so humbled by the excitement around what we’re doing.

Beta ISOs are available at repo.almalinux.org.

A usual reminder: this is a BETA release. It should not be used for production installations. The provided upgrade instructions should not be used on production machines unless you don’t mind if something breaks. If you are looking to see how things are going to work in stable, you are on the right track.

After a long wait (view the previous blog post), the AlmaLinux 9.2 kernel received FIPS validation making it the first software implementation to receive a FIPS 140-3 ESV certificate using SHA3-256 as a conditioner. It’s also the first EL9 distribution to get a FIPS 140-3 certificate for the kernel. View the certificate here.

After months of work, we are happy to announce the AlmaLinux Certification Special Interest Group (SIG), along with our Hardware Certification Program! This SIG has tangible goals and immediate benefits for all users of AlmaLinux, and tons of ways to get involved.

This SIG was born out of a desire to prove that AlmaLinux works in all places that our community needs it to. The members already helping are from all over the world, and have gotten engagement from some of the most respected hardware providers in the world. bootc is a new deployment method that powers Image mode for RHEL and HeliumOS, a new Linux distribution. We are excited to announce that AlmaLinux now offers bootc images for Intel/AMD(x86_64) and ARM64(AArch4).

How did this start?

My goal as developer of HeliumOS is to produce a Linux-based desktop operating system that is user-friendly, stable, and reliable. The first foray towards this goal used a Debian base, however this had some issues:

• Debian has 3-5 years of support. Though stable relative to most Linux distributions, I wanted more stability.
• An unexpected interruption during a traditional Linux package manager update can render the system un-bootable or otherwise broken.

2 months ago, I learned of Image mode for RHEL, a new method of deploying RHEL that used OCI images for updates. Rebasing on Enterprise Linux and using bootc, the technology behind Image mode for RHEL would solve both of the issues that I found with Debian. After various experiments, HeliumOS announced an Alpha release based on CentOS Stream.

We’ve attended quite a few events in the US this summer! In June, we attended Southeast LinuxFest in Charlotte, North Carolina. In July, we traveled to Denver, Colorado for Academy Open Source Days and SIGGRAPH 2024. This month, we went to Rochester, New York for Flock to Fedora. Let’s talk about what we loved about each of them. 

Southeast LinuxFest

SouthEast LinuxFest is a community event for anyone who wants to learn more about Linux and Open Source Software. This relatively small event was a new one for me, and I’m so glad we went! I got to meet a couple of our contributors, have some really good conversations, and, even ensure that everyone there celebrated National Donut Day.

We’re happy to announce that ELevate just received the biggest update since 2021 when the project was first announced.

How did we get here

For anyone new, ELevate allows you to upgrade in-place from older Enterprise Linux distributions to supported versions. It uses the Leapp utility with a few patches and a data library called leapp-data.

Last month we announced that ELevateNG would get promoted to stable this week, and after tons of community-contributed feedback, the time is here! Let’s dive into what has been updated.

In August of 2021 we first launched our new and improved mirror system, including the geo-location feature that allows users to automatically use the closest mirror to them. This had the incredible benefit of making sure users had the fastest access to updates possible. In the time since we launched, we’ve grown from around 100 mirror servers to over 400. The majority of these mirrors are hosted at universities, businesses, and institutions that believe in our mission and want to show their support.

Recently, the VFX community was faced with a regression in glibc causing instability for very commonly used software in RHEL 9.4 and distributions based on it. The fix has been available upstream but was only released today to CentOS Stream 9. We need your help testing the fix before we consider releasing it ourselves.

AlmaLinux OS 9 is impacted by a newly disclosed vulnerability in OpenSSH’s server (sshd) in glibc-based Linux systems similiar to last week’s CVE-2024-6387. The new vulnerability has been assigned the identifier CVE-2024-6409. It involves a signal handler race condition, which could expose your system to potential security risks.

At AlmaLinux, we place security first and we are committed to delivering patches to our users as quickly as possible, especially when our community needs them. The decision to build the update and push the package to production without waiting for a CentOS Stream or RHEL update was made by our newly-formed technical steering committee, ALESCo.

On June 30th CentOS 7 hit end of life, ending the long-loved and widely used CentOS Linux era. While the CentOS Project continues on with CentOS Stream, much of the world still needs another option for updates or upgrading with CentOS 7. The AlmaLinux community has a few options for you. If you are running an AlmaLinux OS 9 machine, you need to know about a vulnerability in OpenSSH’s server (sshd) in glibc-based Linux systems that was published earlier today, July 1, 2024. It has been assigned the identifier CVE-2024-6387 and named regreSSHion. This vulnerability is exploitable remotely and grants unauthenticated root access.

Security is our top priority at AlmaLinux and we aim to deliver patches to our users as quickly as possible. The openssh patch for CVE-2024-6387 has been released and is available for AlmaLinux OS 9 users. The decision to build the update and push the package to production on our own (without a CentOS Stream/RHEL update) was made by our newly-formed technical steering committee, ALESCo.

How it all started

When I joined the AlmaLinux Community, I had a keen interest in Raspberry Pi images. Raspberry Pi is widely known for its role in teaching computing and programming and is also a favorite among DIY enthusiasts. Living in Japan, where the Raspberry Pi community is exceptionally active, I felt inspired to have a hand in boosting the popularity of AlmaLinux OS.

How Elevate supports business needs

As long-time users of AlmaLinux, we were already familiar with Project ELevate for upgrading CentOS 7, but just a few weeks ago we got some exciting news. AlmaLinux Day: Germany - Recap

This past March, we hosted AlmaLinux Day: Germany right next to CloudFest in Rust, Germany. Similar to AlmaLinux Day: Tokyo in December 2023, AlmaLinux Day: Germany focused on the needs and desires of the AlmaLinux community. Sessions covered everything from VFX to HPC to people using AlmaLinux as an upstream provider – from all over the world. We had nearly 300 attendees, we were elated to engage with our community in such a tangible way.

Last month we highlighted our achievements from the CloudFest Hackathon, including our work on a significant improvement for the ELevate project. The Hackathon Team started working on enabling the migration of CentOS 6 machines to CentOS 7 within the ELevate Project.

Today, we are proud to announce that CentOS 6 to CentOS 7 migrations are now a reality in ELevate, making this migration available to users.

Preamble

I remember back in March when I went to CloudFest I was so excited to meet benny Vasquez, the chair of AlmaLinux OS Foundation, and when I got the chance to speak to her she gave me a lot of inspiration to contribute to AlmaLinux in any way I can.

The new AlmaLinux releases are coming shortly (expect our beta releases for 9.4 and 8.10 over the next couple of weeks!), and we’d like to talk about one of the vital components of each system - its security. It’s important to keep your system secure and one of the easiest ways that is rarely talked about is by enabling Secure Boot.

AlmaLinux OS has provided Secure Boot since its 8.4 release.

CVE-2024-1086 - call for testing

In January of this year, a kernel flaw was disclosed and named CVE-2024-1086. This flaw is trivially exploitable on most RHEL-equivalent systems. There are many proof-of-concept posts available now, including one from our Infrastructure team lead, Jonathan Wright (Dealing with CVE-2024-1086). In multi-user scenarios, this flaw is especially problematic.

SCaLE 21x

Earlier this month, we had three back-to-back events: CentOS Connect, FOSDEM, and our AlmaLinux Leadership Summit. Here’s what to know about them for those who weren’t there, and a little bit about what’s to come.

CentOS Connect

CentOS Connect is always a great place for us to connect with the folks most invested in one of our favorite upstream projects. We met tons of people and learned a ton! At this year’s event our Cloud and Virt Team Lead Elkhan Mammadli was able to share a talk about how we automated testing here at AlmaLinux with openQA and Testinfra. The talk was recorded, so you can watch it yourself!

In December, we hosted the first AlmaLinux Day in Tokyo. As a user-focused event that brought together our community from all over Japan, this wildly successful event focused on the needs and desires of the open source community in Japan. Hello, Community! We are excited to share that we are about to release a great deal of updates for the ELevate Project.

ELevate now supports EPEL and more

ELevate, a fork of Red Hat’s Leapp project, supports migrations between CentOS 7 and Enterprise Linux (EL) 8, and between EL8 and EL9 systems. It has helped more than 50,000 systems upgrade in place, allowing our global community to easily keep their infrastructure updated and more secure. The AlmaLinux community is constantly working on improving the project.

Hey Community! We’re just sharing some news on both AlmaLinux 9.3 and 8.9 images updates.

Cloud and Container Images Updates and Changes

AlmaLinux OS provides a variety of cloud images, so we’ve been updating them to 9.3 and 8.9 versions including:

• Amazon AWS
  • Starting AlmaLinux OS versions 8.9 and 9.3 Amazon Machine images have UEFI boot support. Thus boot mode was changed to the uefi-preferred meaning that UEFI will be chosen on the supported instance types. We are planning to publish separate AMIs with enabled Secure Boot and NitroTPM(vTPM) support.
• Generic Cloud
  • Starting AlmaLinux OS 8.9 Generic Cloud images have hybrid - BIOS and UEFI - boot support. The download URLs of the UEFI images are symlinked to the current image for compatibility.
• OpenNebula
  • Starting AlmaLinux OS 8.9 Generic Cloud images have hybrid - BIOS and UEFI - boot support.
• Microsoft Azure images for x86_64 and AArch64 architectures
• Oracle Cloud Infrastructure

Container images have been updated as well. You can get official Docker images and OCI Images from Quay.io.

Late last year we experienced a system failure that resulted in the loss of the master key that would allow us to extend the life of the GPG key that we use to sign packages for AlmaLinux 8, and it is set to expire in January of 2024. While we have ensured that this won’t happen again, some users will need to take specific steps to import the new GPG key.

2023 was a big year for the AlmaLinux community. As the year draws to a close, let’s take a look back at some big milestones!

New versions of AlmaLinux OS

2023 marked the release of AlmaLinux 9.2, AlmaLinux 8.8, AlmaLinux 9.3, and AlmaLinux 8.9! Thanks to our amazing Core, Build, and Infra SIGs, our first releases this year were out at lightning speed. Even with the expanded testing that we’ve added with our implementation of OpenQA, 9.2 was released the same day as RHEL (Red Hat Enterprise Linux) 9.2, and 8.8 was released just 2 days after RHEL 8.8! After we changed our release process in July, we expected longer delays for AlmaLinux 9.3 and 8.9, but even those were only a week behind RHEL.

Hello, Community! Today, AlmaLinux OS Foundation is eager to share some big news concerning our ELevate project, an initiative to support migrations between major versions of RHEL-derivatives.

Previously, the project only provided support for official operating systems repositories, excluding external repositories. However, the AlmaLinux Team made significant improvements.

We are thrilled to announce that the first step in EPEL support is now included in the ELevate project, enabling smooth migrations between CentOS7 and AlmaLinux 8.

In just over two months we’ll be returning to FOSDEM again with a stand, a bunch of friends, and this time we get to help host the Distros Dev Room! 

What is a Developer Room?

From the FOSDEM website:

Developer rooms are assigned to self-organising groups to work together on open source projects, to discuss topics relevant to a broader subset of the community, etc.

The general idea is that a group of people get together to organize a mini-event inside the FOSDEM umbrella. The groups of folks submit a proposal to the FOSDEM organizers, and then recruit content and build a schedule for the room. Everyone involved is likely to be a volunteer, but the content is always extremely beneficial, and presented by leaders and experts on their topics.

Hello, Community! Since AlmaLinux OS has shifted its direction to RHEL compatibility, we can now provide additional content for our community. For that reason, two additional repositories have been added - Testing and Synergy. Today, we are announcing that both repositories are available for AlmaLinux OS 8 and AlmaLinux OS 9.

Testing Repository

As we mentioned last week, the Testing repository contains security updates that AlmaLinux OS is now able to release without waiting for the patches to be released upstream. As these packages require additional testing before being released, we invite the community to help test them and provide feedback.

Earlier this week a few vulnerabilities were reported to affect Intel and AMD CPUs. The AlmaLinux OS Foundation calls for the community to help test the freshly updated packages for AlmaLinux OS 8 and AlmaLinux OS 9.

How do I install updated packages?

As we recently changed the build process for AlmaLinux OS, and are now aiming to be RHEL compatible with Red Hat Enterprise Linux, we are now able to release updates without waiting for the patches to be released upstream. To help accommodate that, a Testing repo has been created for packages that differ from RHEL and require additional testing by our users. To be able to help with testing, the Testing repo should be enabled on the AlmaLinux machine:

The future of AlmaLinux OS

In case you missed it, Red Hat announced they will no longer be providing the means for downstream clones to continue to be 1:1 binary copies of Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL). Very quickly, both Jack and I shared some initial thoughts, but we intentionally took our time deciding the next right step for AlmaLinux OS. After much discussion, the AlmaLinux OS Foundation board today has decided to drop the aim to be 1:1 with RHEL. AlmaLinux OS will instead aim to be binary compatible with RHEL*.

As we discussed last week, on June 21 Red Hat announced that RHEL source code will only be available via the Red Hat Customer Portal.

What is the status of security updates?

Prior to Red Hat’s policy change, when RHEL published a package update of any sort (security or bugfix), they published the corresponding source code into a repository. Then AlmaLinux integrated the update into our own build and test system, produced a new RPM, and published it to our repositories.

Yesterday, RedHat announced another massive shift that impacts all rebuilds and forks of Red Hat Enterprise Linux. Going forward Red Hat will now only be releasing the source code for RHEL RPMs behind their customer portal. Since all RHEL clones rely on the sources being published, this is causing disruption for the entire Red Hat ecosystem, once again.

Earlier today at a press event in Tokyo, Japan, we announced the newest member of the AlmaLinux family: CyberTrust Japan, a well known security company, and the powerhouse behind MIRACLE LINUX.

Over the last few months of getting to know the CyberTrust folks, I have been able to glimpse the considerate, thoughtful, and informed way they approach all decisions, and it has made me even more humbled when considering their decision to join forces with the AlmaLinux community. All Things Open ‘22 was AMAZING

We had a chance to attend All Things Open last week, and it was an absolute blast for us! In case you haven’t heard, All Things Open is a conference specifically designed around education and aimed at coming together to learn some of the hardest and deepest lessons in tech. It’s just full of everyone from college students to CIOs and CTOs trying to make the best decisions for their futures. Meeting so many new people is always a blast, but the highlight for us is the people who are using AlmaLinux to solve their problems every day.

The AlmaLinux OS Foundation announced support for the IBM z (s390x) platform thanks to a collaboration with Gold Partner, Sine Nomine Associates (SNA).

Hello, IBM Z fans and Linux world at large. Today we have an interesting story to share about a new release - AlmaLinux 8.6 for s390x. The thing is, this release should not exist! Let’s explain.

In general, we build an AlmaLinux release by consuming upstream sources from the CentOS git and pulling those into our AlmaLinux Git Server which are then built using by the AlmaLinux Build System. While the CentOS project built releases for a few architectures, CentOS 8 was never built for IBM Z!

Over a month ago I announced that we would be holding our first board election. Our nearly 300 members of the AlmaLinux OS Foundation have spent the last two weeks casting their votes for the new board, and I am very happy to announce the newest board. These seven nominees have been elected by the community to serve a three-year term as the AlmaLinux OS Foundation board members.

How the election worked

The AlmaLinux bylaws were set up to include regular elections, to ensure AlmaLinux could achieve the goal of all foundation members having a voice.

After a year and a half, the time has finally come! The first election for the AlmaLinux OS Foundation board of directors is set to take place in September this year. This is a big moment for us and for the community at large, so we want to be as transparent and forthcoming as possible.

Let’s take a look at where we’re at right now.

When we started the AlmaLinux OS Foundation we didn’t have members to vote into a board, and so all current board members were appointed. Though necessary at the start of any such organization, it is ultimately counter to our goal of ensuring that the folks who are invested in the future of AlmaLinux are the ones to choose the future of AlmaLinux. Our bylaws were setup to include regular elections from the start, to ensure we could achieve the goal of all community members having a voice.

The Top500 Supercomputers list released for the June 2022 update came out a short while ago and some community members spotted a familiar name on the list–AlmaLinux! CentOS was such a large part of the HPC community and AlmaLinux is continuing that tradition. We’ve been working closely with many in the HPC space including software and hardware vendors, super computer operators and researchers to make sure things continue to run smoothly for those in the HPC space looking for their next steps and providing a drop-in replacement.

Tenable provides coverage of AlmaLinux with the addition of a new Nessus plugin family. The plugin has been released to cover all existing advisories for AlmaLinux.

Nessus is one of the world’s most popular and deployed proprietary vulnerability scanners developed by Tenable. The security checks information is free and available immediately.

As information about new vulnerabilities is discovered and released publicly, The AlmaLinux team updates our errata and OVAL feeds. We’ve been working with the Tenable Research team to help them ingest and utilize those feeds in order to design programs to detect them. These programs are named plugins and are written in the Nessus Attack Scripting Language (NASL). The plugins contain vulnerability information, a simplified set of remediation actions and the algorithm to test for the presence of the security issue.

Wouldya take a look at that? A million! A million pulls of our Docker Library Official Image. What a huge milestone, WOW! We’re seriously humbled and we’d like to thank the community, for all the contribution and support. AlmaLinux keeps getting better each day thanks to the efforts of our amazing community.

We’ve also officially release containers for ppc64le available on all the major registries and we’ve also gone ahead and updated our containers to 8.5.4 and patched against the latest security updates where applicable. 18 packages have been updated and you can see that work here.

Our site is our face to the world and is the primary source of information and resources for tens of thousands of visitors each month. As we continue to grow we want to make sure the site gets even better and more useful, informative, localized and accessible.

To that end, we would like to put out a call for ideas, improvements and also contributors. Our current stack is django and python and lives here on github. We’re not necessarily against moving to a different stack if anyone has a good idea and thinks they can pull it off.

Hey Community, just wanted to share some quick news on updates to Live Media and cloud images. All Live media have been updated to 8.5 thanks to the great efforts on the parts of our community and our Live Media SIG.

All variants are now updated to AlmaLinux 8.5 including GNOME Mini, GNOME, KDE and XFCE.

You can now grab Live Media images from repo.almalinux.org.

Sources are up on GitHub with build scripts and the configuration and kickstart files needed to produce Live Media images: github.com/AlmaLinux/sig-livemedia just in case you’d like to tweak any of them to your liking.

WOW! What a first year! The AlmaLinux community finds itself looking back at a successful 12 months with so many significant advancements and milestones. We’ve managed to pull together people from all over the world and unite and unify everyone while leveling-up this new CentOS ecosystem. We’ve also delivered three releases, with download counts in the millions. We recently celebrated over 500K Docker pulls (we have almost a million now), a beta release for AlmaLinux 8.5 for PowerPC, our first Platinum sponsor Codenotary, and, of course, the release of AlmaLinux 8.5 within 48 hours of the Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) release. That was all just in the last couple of months.

Hello HPC Fans. A few weeks ago we updated our images on Microsoft Azure to 8.5. Today we are proud to announce the general availability of AlmaLinux OS for Azure HPC based on AlmaLinux OS 8.5. This was a tremendous team effort starting from community requests and developed in collaboration between the AlmaLinux community and the team over at our amazing sponsors Microsoft Azure.

We had a couple of goals when we set out on this project. First, is to further enable scientific computing and research. That is something that we feel very strongly about and many across the vast expanse of scientific research have begun to start leveraging the cloud due to the lack of resource constraints there. It is much easier to do you work whether it be simulations or something else if you can add nodes instantly with a quick command in your terminal. Second, HPC is often out of reach for many due to the large investment that is typically required. Combining the benefits of cloud economies-of-scale along with HPC technology opens the door for many to be able to experience what HPC is and what it really do. We hope that it will inspire those already there to explore what more they can accomplish and inspire the next generation of scientists and researchers to begin experimenting.

About two months ago we eagerly announced that we were able to then open memberships for the AlmaLinux OS Foundation. I outlined why I thought it was important that we’d structured the governance of the project this way–in order to give community members true ownership and a direct voice in the direction of AlmaLinux OS. The reception was tremendous and we’ve had hundreds of applicants and we’ve so far approved, I believe over 100 community members and dozens of mirror members. It’s very encouraging and refreshing to see the community rise to the occasion. I salute each and every person who has been active in our wonderful community, has helped to make it such a welcoming, friendly and diverse place and has taken the step to make their voice heard.

For those less familiar, what are CIS Benchmarks you ask? CIS Benchmarks are known best methods for the secure configuration of a target system that are both developed and accepted by the government, business, industry, and academia. You can use a CIS-made tool, CIS-CAT, to run and audit and compare the system’s configuration to the benchmark and generate a report that contains all the potential issues with the security.

Hello to all of you amazing folks invested in the success of AlmaLinux!

I wanted to provide you with a bit of an update around memberships, the membership plans, and the membership committee.

Since we opened the membership application process for the AlmaLinux OS Foundation almost two weeks ago we’ve already had 76 people and organizations apply to be members at one of the membership levels. At the October meeting of the Board of Directors we also approved the plans for the governance of the membership committee, which we’ll be adding to the website shortly.

Presenting the AlmaLinux OS 8.5 Beta, codenamed Arctic Sphynx, for the x86_64 and Arm architectures, now ready for testing!

We’re excited about it too, but we have to remind you: this is a BETA release and should not be used for production installations. The provided upgrade instructions should not be used on production machines, unless you don’t mind if something breaks. Now if you wanna test this somehow, somewhere to see how things will work in 8.5 stable, you’re on the right track.

I like crocheting, reading (though it’s mostly audiobooks these days), card games, board games, baking, music, and wine. It’s a great day for some tasty Pi! Today we’re releasing some awesome Raspberry Pi updates. You can grab them from the AlmaLinux Raspberry Pi Github Repo.

New Raspberry Pi Repo

We’ve setup a new repo to host all Raspberry Pi packages at https://repo.almalinux.org/almalinux/8/raspberrypi/. This will enable super easy updates in the future and that should be syncing to all of our global mirrors.

Kernel and (properly working!) Wi-Fi

We’ve bumped the Kernel to 5.10.60 and we’ve built a new linux-firmware package with Matthias Brugger’s RPi NVRAM fix which enables the Wi-Fi to work right out of the box now.

Hello Community. Today we announced that membership in the AlmaLinux Foundation is now open to everyone (It’s 100% Free). First of all, many are probably asking what is this? Second, who cares? I wanted to take a few brief moments to share some insight, some feelings and hopefully explain why this is so important.

When CentOS was initially founded by Lance Davis in 2004 no one really knew how fundamentally important it would grow to become in the Linux ecosystem–as a concept, as a distribution and really as a lynchpin of the modern internet. The concept of a community-driven OS, which drew upon an enterprise grade base made freely and widely available was a real novelty. As far as the technical aspect, the “entOS” part of CentOS, it has been resoundingly successful.

Hello, Community! Lots going on here in AlmaLinux land as we continue our journey through the clouds. Today we’re pleased to share the latest updates about AlmaLinux Cloud Images. Those include aarch64 support for our AWS AMIs, support for OpenNebula x86_64 and aarch64, and aarch64 support for our Generic (cloud-init) Cloud images/OpenStack.

Today, we are glad to announce the availability of AlmaLinux OS on the Azure marketplace. Images are available for both Gen1 and Gen2 and are deployable from the Azure portal, Azure command line utility as well as from the marketplace link.

Aside from just images, we’ve also established a worldwide mirror network within Azure regions in order to make the user experience when installing updates or new software second to none. All updates and/or software installations will automatically use local Azure mirrors, thanks to our new mirror service released a little while ago. The best part is, its all transparent to you, the user.

Hey all! Time flies. Just last week we announced AlmaLinux Live Media beta images available in 2 options: GNOME and GNOME Mini.

Since then, community members have requested other desktop environments as well and so we’ve worked hard over the past few days to build KDE and XFCE Live Media Images and we are happy to announce those today.

Hi Community! We’ve got some great news. Announcing our AlmaLinux 8 Live Media beta.

Currently, the Beta is available in 2 variants:

• GNOME Mini: contains a core GNOME environment with the Firefox browser
• GNOME: contains a full GNOME environment with popular workstation applications like LibreOffice, Thunderbird and so on.

Also, stay tuned because KDE and XFCE Live Media images are coming soon.

Images support both BIOS and UEFI (including Secure Boot mode), can be written to DVD or USB media.

Great news about our mirror service! Our mirror service is what powers distribution of ISOs, packages and updates across the world. A while ago we developed and started testing a new geolocation-based mirror service which helps you get software faster and easier based on where in the world you are and what the closest source is. There’s been a lot of progress since the AlmaLinux Beta release was announced back in January 2021. The AlmaLinux community has grown enormously, and we’ve established the AlmaLinux governance board.

This release was the true product of collaboration. Minimal Image

The minimal image is a stripped-down image that uses the microdnf package manager and contains a very limited package set. It is designed for applications that come with their own dependencies bundled (e.g. NodeJS, Python). The almalinux:minimal tag always points to the most recent version of the minimal image. Tags for major (e.g. almalinux:8-minimal) and minor (e.g. almalinux:8.4-minimal) releases are also available.

Thanks to the community feedback, we worked on the bugs and fixed most of them. By all accounts, the beta release was pretty stable already, so the Release Candidate was the likely choice (instead of another beta).

• On Monday, February 1st, AlmaLinux OS went live! Our public Beta version is now available to everyone, and we anticipate your active participation in testing! To facilitate the communication and address the questions you might have after the first round of tests, we are hosting a live QA webinar with AlmaLinux OS Community on February 10 at 5 PM (UTC) / 9 AM (PST). CloudLinux is proud to announce the release of AlmaLinux OS Beta. We’ve collected community feedback and built our new beta release around what you would expect from an enterprise-level Linux distribution. AlmaLinux OS is a completely free 1:1 binary compatible fork of Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) 8, inspired by the community and built by the engineers and talent behind CloudLinux. Visit this link to download Beta images.With the Beta release deployed, we’d like to ask the community to be involved and provide feedback. We aim to build a Linux distribution entirely from community contributions and feedback. During AlmaLinux OS Beta, we ask for assistance in testing, documentation, support and future direction for the operating system. Together, we can build a Linux distribution that fills the gap left by the now unsupported CentOS distribution.The AlmaLinux team set up all the necessary infrastructure to make it convenient for our contributors to provide their input. The public repository on Github is where we will finalize the source code for the system, and any additional documentation will be posted on the wiki. We set up the wiki and repository to make it easy for the community to provide as much information and feedback as possible. The AlmaLinux team will review every comment and request, but we ask that only registered contributors file bug reports to filter out spam.To facilitate communication and help answer some of the common questions you might already have, we will be hosting a live QA webinar with the AlmaLinux OS team. The webinar will take place on February 10, 5 PM (UTC) / 9 AM (PST). Throughout the last few weeks, the team at CloudLinux has worked tirelessly to gear our internal infrastructure to meet the needs of launching a free, open, public Linux distro that’s driven by the community. We’ve committed to AlmaLinux OS, and we see the associated responsibilities in a serious light. While we are preparing the new distro for launch within the next month, we are also putting in place the structures that will ensure continuity for AlmaLinux OS - and that ensures community involvement.
