Er wordt nu echt werk gemaakt van een minimumleeftijd voor bestuurders van fatbikes. Dat zegt minister Karremans van Infrastructuur. Maar wat de leeftijd zou moeten worden, is niet bekend. Er wordt gedacht aan 12, 14 of 16 jaar.

Verder kondigt Karremans aan dat hij "een wettelijke basis" wil maken voor fatbikevrije zones. Een aantal gemeenten heeft al gebieden aangewezen waar geen fatbikes meer mogen komen, terwijl het juridisch niet mogelijk is om ze apart te verbieden. Dat komt doordat ze in dezelfde categorie vallen als andere elektrische fietsen met trapondersteuning.

Omzeilen

De VVD-minister wil gemeenten helpen om "binnensteden en winkelgebieden" veiliger te maken. De reden is dat "veel fatbikes zorgen voor onveilige verkeerssituaties", aldus Karremans. Hij spreekt van "een zorgwekkende stijging van het aantal ongevallen onder jongeren" en stelt verder dat fatbikers overlast veroorzaken.

Voorwaarde om fatbikes aan te pakken is wel dat duidelijk is wat een fatbike is en wat een 'gewone' elektrische fiets. En daar wringt de schoen, want dat is niet zo makkelijk en bovendien kunnen fabrikanten hun ontwerp aanpassen om nieuwe definities te omzeilen (bijvoorbeeld door een 'skinnybike' te bedenken).

Minister Karremans zegt dat hij aan een onderzoeksbureau heeft gevraagd om te kijken hoe de fatbike "op pragmatische wijze" kan worden onderscheiden van de elektrische fiets. "Het streven naar een perfecte definitie leidt tot stilstand", aldus de minister. "Terwijl de problematiek zich afspeelt voor onze ogen."

'Liever de kat'

Hij zegt te hopen op een wettelijke omschrijving die past op 80 of 90 procent van de fatbikes, waarmee "het overgrote deel" van het probleem wordt opgelost. Een kat-en-muisspel met fatbikefabrikanten lijkt Karremans onvermijdelijk. "Maar dan ben ik liever de kat."

Ondertussen gaat het al tijden over fatbikes in politiek Den Haag. In 2024 sprak de Tweede Kamer al over een minimumleeftijd. Toenmalig minister Madlener wees toen ook al op de moeilijkheid van het onderscheid maken tussen verschillende fietsen.

Destijds werd ook gesproken over een helmplicht voor jongeren op allerlei soorten elektrische fietsen. Karremans zegt vandaag dat hij daar nog steeds mee bezig is. Een helm zou verplicht worden tot 18 jaar. De minister verwacht dat de plicht september 2027 kan ingaan.

Bij een brandweerkazerne in Geffen, in de gemeente Oss, is vannacht opnieuw ingebroken. Het is al de derde inbraak deze week bij een kazerne in de gemeente.

De politie kreeg rond 02.00 uur een melding van een mogelijke inbraak in Geffen. Toen de agenten bij de kazerne aankwamen, zagen ze dat de ruit van een roldeur kapot was en dat er materialen waren gestolen.

De brandweer gebruikt dit gereedschap om mensen te bevrijden, zegt een woordvoerder. Wanneer er vervangende materialen zijn aangeschaft, wil zij niet zeggen. "We willen de inbrekers niet wijzer maken dan nodig."

Golf aan inbraken

Eerder deze week werd al ingebroken bij kazernes in Ravenstein en Berghem, ook in de gemeente Oss. Bij de drie inbraken gingen de criminelen op dezelfde manier te werk, schrijft het Brabants Dagblad. "Een ruit van het rolluik forceren en naar binnen klimmen." Het is niet duidelijk of het om dezelfde daders gaat.

Bij brandweerkazernes in de hele provincie Noord-Brabant is sprake van een inbraakgolf. Zo was het begin deze maand al raak bij een kazerne in Bergeijk, in januari in Someren en in december in Zundert, Bladel en Heeze. Bij de post in Geffen werd ook al in februari ingebroken.

Om die reden wil de woordvoerder van brandweer Brabant-Noord niet te veel informatie geven. Wel doet ze een beroep op omwonenden van brandweerkazernes. "We vragen ze om een melding te maken als ze bijvoorbeeld hun hond uitlaten en iets verdachts zien."

Wolven die mensen hebben aangevallen of die binnen twee weken twee keer vee hebben aangevallen, krijgen het predicaat probleemwolf. Deze wolven mogen daardoor afgeschoten worden. Verder wordt het sneller toegestaan om wolven af te schrikken met bijvoorbeeld een paintballgeweer (met verfballetjes) of met licht en geluid.

Het kabinet komt met deze maatregelen omdat er te veel incidenten zijn, zegt staatssecretaris Erkens. "Op dit moment mag bijna niks. Het draagvlak neemt af en het thema leidt tot een behoorlijke polarisering."

Voor het kabinet weegt vooral het voorkomen van gevaarlijke confrontaties mee. Erkens: "Ze zijn steeds minder schuw geworden. Vorig jaar werd er nog een kindje de struiken in getrokken. We moeten alles op alles zetten om grote incidenten te voorkomen."

Schuw maken

Daarbij helpt het niet dat mensen de dieren proberen te lokken voor het maken van filmpjes door vlees buiten zetten, zegt Erkens. "Over de hele linie is het beleid: schuw maken. Als een wolf twee keer bij een school is gezien mogen provincies en gemeenten met paintball op hem schieten om hem te verjagen. En bij een echte aanval mogen ze hem afschieten."

In de Europese Unie is de status van de wolf verlaagd van strikt beschermde diersoort naar beschermde diersoort. Landen hebben hierdoor de mogelijkheid zelf een afschietbeleid te formuleren, rekening houdend met deze status.

Naar schatting leven er in Nederland inmiddels veertien wolvenroedels. In toenemende mate zijn er confrontaties tussen mensen en wolven. Al verschillende keren moesten kinderen binnenblijven omdat er bij hun school een wolf was gesignaleerd.

Ook ondervinden veehouders veel schade door wolvenaanvallen. Het aantal meldingen van aanvallen op vee nam de afgelopen jaren enorm toe. Al was er in het eerste kwartaal van dit jaar een lichte daling.

Ecologisch onderzoek

BIJ12, de overheidsinstantie die de wolvenpopulatie in de gaten houdt, zegt dat de wolven zich in de provincies Drenthe, Flevoland, Overijssel en Gelderland hebben gevestigd. Daar planten ze zich voort en blijven ze in aantal toenemen.

De universiteit van Wageningen onderzocht in 2024 hoeveel wolven zich theoretisch gezien in Nederland kunnen vestigen. Daar kwam uit: 23 tot 56 wolvenroedels. Een ecologisch onderzoek waaruit moet blijken hoeveel wolven Nederland ook echt 'aankan' wordt dit voorjaar verwacht.

De universiteit onderzoekt verder hoe de wolf zich door Nederland beweegt. En er loopt ook nog een onderzoek naar het maatschappelijk draagvlak. In Vlaanderen, waar ook verzet is tegen de groeiende wolvenpopulatie, is zo'n maatschappelijk onderzoek onlangs van start gegaan.

Erkens overlegt met de buurlanden Duitsland en België over een gezamenlijke wolvenaanpak.

Het kabinet draait een bezuiniging op hulp bij de bijstandsuitkering terug. Met het potje van 30 miljoen euro worden mensen opgespoord die recht hebben op een uitkering maar daar geen gebruik van maken.

De overheid geeft in totaal ruim 8 miljard euro per jaar uit aan bijstandsuitkeringen. Maar eigenlijk hebben daar nog veel meer mensen recht op: volgens schattingen vragen nu 160.000 tot 200.000 mensen en gezinnen onterecht geen uitkering aan.

Het kabinet is er voorstander van om die groep te helpen. Toch werd het potje voor die hulp geschrapt, omdat er in de voorjaarsnota geld nodig was om andere tegenvallers op te vangen. Dat leidde tot verontwaardigde reacties bij oppositiepartijen als GroenLinks-PvdA.

'Onverteerbaar'

Ook experts hadden veel kritiek. Zij vinden dat kwetsbare burgers geholpen moeten worden, omdat die anders mogelijk in veel grotere problemen komen. De Vereniging van Nederlandse Gemeenten (VNG) noemde de bezuiniging "onverteerbaar".

Kamerleden van de regeringspartijen D66 en CDA keerden zich uiteindelijk, tot verbazing van de oppositie, ook tegen de bezuiniging van het kabinet. Daarop kreeg minister Aartsen (Werk en Participatie) de vraag om met een alternatieve dekking te komen.

Aartsen stelt nu voor om het kindgebonden budget vanaf volgend jaar voor meer gezinnen te versoberen. Daardoor krijgen gezinnen met een inkomen vanaf 58.000 euro minder budget, dat was eerst 60.000 euro.

Niet alleen monsters als de mosasaurus, plesiosaurus en reuzenhaai bevolkten de oerzeeën, ook een enorme octopus stond er bovenaan de voedselketen. Nieuwe onderzoeksmethoden bewijzen dat het dier zo groot kon worden als een stadsbus en opvallend agressief was, melden paleontologen in Science.

Wetenschappers hadden het belang van de zee-reus tot nu toe gemist doordat hij als weekdier nauwelijks fossiele resten achterliet. Moderne digitale technieken stelden Japanse experts in staat beter onderzoek te doen. Wat ze vonden herschrijft het beeld van de prehistorische onderwaterwereld.

"We dachten dat de afgelopen 370 miljoen jaar gewervelde roofdieren de ecosystemen in de zee domineerden: eerst vissen en haaien, daarna zee-reptielen en ten slotte walvissen", zegt paleontoloog Yasuhiro Iba over de ontdekking. "Onze studie laat zien dat ongewervelden in de zeeën van het Krijt ook bovenaan de voedselpiramide stonden."

Laagje voor laagje

Het team onderzocht het enige verharde deel van de octopus, de snavel die hij tussen zijn poten verstopt heeft. Het ging daarbij om in Japan en Canada gevonden exemplaren van de soort Nanaimoteuthis haggarti. Daarbij maakten de onderzoekers ook gebruik van wat ze "digitaal fossieljagen" noemen, het millimeter voor millimeter scannen van grondlagen op zoek naar resten.

De digitale vondsten die ze deden konden ze vergelijken met hedendaagse overblijfselen. Daaruit konden ze afleiden dat het dier zo'n 18 meter lang moet zijn geweest. Dat is een paar meter langer dan de mosasaurussen of haaien die de octopus 100 tot 72 miljoen jaar geleden kan zijn tegengekomen.

De details op de scans toonden ook aan dat de octopus een geducht jager moet zijn geweest. Slijtage op de bekken verraadt dat ze met veel geweld schelpen of botten zullen hebben gekraakt. Dat in sommige gevallen tot 10 procent van de kaken was afgesleten, wijst volgens de onderzoekers op een "onverwacht agressief voedingspatroon".

Intelligent?

Het onderzoeksteam zag bovendien aanwijzingen voor intelligent gedrag: in sommige gevallen was de ene zijde van een bek meer afgesleten dan de andere. Dat wijst er volgens hen op dat het dier een voorkeurskant heeft gehad, gedrag dat ze in verband brengen met complexere hersenactiviteit.

Iba noemt deze slijtage "het meest verrassende resultaat". Het bewijst dat het dier zich totaal anders gedroeg dan de kleinere hedendaagse varianten. Die verschalken liever relaxed een schelp dan dat ze rondwaren als de schrik van de zee.

Bij de onderzoekers drong het beeld zich op van de Kraken, het mythologische onderwatermonster dat complete schepen naar de zeebodem kon sleuren. "Met hun lange armen, krachtige kaken en geavanceerd gedrag zou je dit echt een Kraken uit het Krijt kunnen noemen."

De politie heeft een 17-jarige jongen uit Uithoorn aangehouden in verband met de explosie in maart op de Amsterdamse Zuidas. Volgens de politie ging het om een explosie "met een terroristisch oogmerk".

De jongen wordt verdacht van het medeplegen van de explosie. Meerdere aanhoudingen worden niet uitgesloten. Omdat de verdachte in beperkingen zit en het onderzoek nog loopt wil de politie op dit moment niet meer kwijt.

Explosie

In de nacht van 15 op 16 maart ontstond na een explosie een kleine brand bij een pand aan de Strawinskylaan waarin ook een Amerikaanse bank gevestigd is. Een beveiliger wist de brand snel te blussen.

Op sociale media werd de verantwoordelijkheid voor de actie opgeëist door dezelfde groep die even daarvoor aanslagen had opgeëist op een synagoge in Luik, een Joodse school in Amsterdam en een synagoge in Rotterdam.

Op videobeelden waren twee in het zwart geklede verdachten te zien. Ze kwamen aangereden op een fatbike. Een van de twee plaatste een explosief bij een draaideur van de bank. Hij ging er lopend vandoor in de richting van station Amsterdam-Zuid.

Alle begrip voor bezorgde burgers, maar bij geweld tijdens een demonstratie "trekken we een grens". Dat zegt minister Van Weel van Justitie en Veiligheid over de onrust bij de anti-azc-protesten in Loosdrecht van deze week.

Woensdagavond raakte een agent gewond bij het protest bij het oude gemeentehuis van de gemeente Wijdemeren, waar Loosdrecht onder valt. De bedoeling is dat in het pand zo'n honderd asielzoekers worden opgevangen voor maximaal een half jaar.

Echt tuig

Er werd onder meer met zwaar vuurwerk en volle frisdrankblikjes gegooid. Ook maandag- en dinsdagavond waren er honderden demonstranten in Loosdrecht. Ook die protesten waren onrustig.

Van Weel (VVD) zei voorafgaand aan de ministerraad dat hij de zorgen van burgers begrijpt "als deze besluiten opeens genomen worden". Maar hij hekelt het geweld van de demonstranten: "Er was echt tuig, er werd echt gereld."

Hij vraagt zich af of de demonstranten wel allemaal bezorgde burgers uit de regio waren. Volgens de minister is dit soort demonstraties "een soort aanzuigplek voor groepen die niks goeds in de zin hebben, die uit zijn op rellen of een ideologische overtuiging hebben". In hoeverre dat zo is, wordt onderzocht.

Tik van de politie

Op sociale media gaan beelden rond van de rellen en ook van politiegeweld. Er klinken ook geluiden dat het optreden van de politie overdreven was, maar daar wil de minister niks van weten. "Ik sta achter de inzet van de politie, er is geen aanleiding om dit buitensporig te vinden."

Van Weel stelt dat je "nooit ziet wat er aan vooraf is gegaan" in online video's over politiegeweld. "Dat wordt dan weggeknipt en dan zie je alleen de tik van de politie."

In het oude gemeentehuis in de Noord-Hollandse plaats Loosdrecht kunnen 110 asielzoekers worden ondergebracht. De gemeente meldde deze week de eerste asielzoekers begin mei te verwachten.

Woensdag kwam de rechter tot de conclusie dat de opvang kan doorgaan. Dertien omwonenden en ondernemers hadden bezwaar gemaakt tegen de tijdelijke opvanglocatie. De rechter oordeelde dat humane opvang van asielzoekers zwaarder weegt dan het belang van omwonenden om daar inspraak in te hebben.

Verantwoordelijk minister Van den Brink van Asiel en Migratie deed vorige maand een oproep aan gemeenten om meer asielplekken te regelen, nu een groot tekort aan opvanglocaties dreigt.

Terwijl de brandstofprijzen het wereldnieuws domineren door de oorlog in het Midden-Oosten, gaan ruim vijftig landen vanaf vandaag in Colombia met elkaar in gesprek over hoe ze kunnen stoppen met fossiele brandstoffen. De conferentie wordt mede georganiseerd door grootverbruiker en -exporteur Nederland, wat bij de aankondiging in november leidde tot zowel verbazing als enthousiasme.

Het is ook best een uitzonderlijke bijeenkomst. Bij de Conference of the Parties (COP), de grote jaarlijkse klimaattop waarvoor heel de wereld afreist, is het in dertig jaar tijd één keer gelukt om een zinsnede over "een transitie weg van fossiele brandstoffen en energiesystemen" in een slotverklaring te krijgen. Dat gebeurde in 2023, op de top in Dubai, maar in de jaren erna liepen pogingen om daar gevolg aan te geven steeds vast.

Uit frustratie daarover is nu deze zesdaagse conferentie geboren. Met name landen die fossiele brandstoffen maken houden bij de VN-toppen het uitfaseren daarvan tegen. Daarom wil men nu buiten de gebaande paden gaan. De hoop is een coalition of the willing te smeden die wil nadenken over hoe landen samen van de fossiele brandstoffen af kunnen komen.

Geen focus op slottekst

"Dat lijkt me een slimme zet", zegt jurist Margaretha Wewerinke-Singh, die met haar collega's van de Universiteit van Amsterdam een beleidsadvies schreef voor deelnemers aan de top. "Het is natuurlijk jammer dat het niet lukt om dit op mondiaal niveau te doen, maar landen met de politieke wil - de groep die nu komt - kunnen zelf ook al veel doen. Die hoeven niet te wachten tot de hele wereld er klaar voor is."

Bij de VN-klimaattoppen ligt de focus altijd sterk op de slottekst, legt Wewerinke-Singh uit. "Dagenlang wordt dan onderhandeld, tot diep in de nacht, soms over één woord. Maar nu, als er geen uit-onderhandelde slotverklaring hoeft te liggen, kun je het met elkaar hebben over wat er moet gebeuren en wat de grootste obstakels zijn."

De opkomst vergeleken met de jaarlijkse VN-klimaattop is niet heel groot. Ruim vijftig landen doen mee, vergeleken met de gebruikelijke 198. Grootuitstoters en fossielproducenten China, India, Saudi-Arabië en de VS ontbreken, maar andere grootmachten zoals Australië, Canada, Noorwegen en Brazilië doen wel mee. De aanwezigen zouden goed zijn voor ongeveer een vijfde van de wereldwijde productie; een fors aandeel, maar lang niet alles.

Nina Jurna, correspondent Latijns-Amerika:

"Deze gezamenlijke Nederlands-Colombiaanse conferentie wordt gehouden in havenstad Santa Marta, en dat is geen willekeurige keuze. Santa Marta staat bekend om zijn steenkoolhaven. Colombia is de grootste steenkoolexporteur van Latijns-Amerika. Ook is het land de op vier na grootste olieproducent in de regio.

Maar de linkse president Gustavo Petro voert een beleid om Colombia groener te maken en minder te laten leunen op fossiele brandstoffen. Zo worden er bijvoorbeeld geen vergunningen meer verleend voor nieuwe steenkool-, olie- of gasexploraties. Tijdens deze conferentie wil Colombia zich dus als voorbeeld opstellen.

Tegelijkertijd is het zeer de vraag of Colombia zelf deze groene agenda zal kunnen handhaven. Eind mei zijn er verkiezingen en de economie en energie zijn grote thema's. Rechtse partijen willen het verbod op het gebied van nieuwe olie-exploraties opheffen. Zij beloven de economie een injectie te geven door vergunningen voor exploraties juist weer uit te geven, en in fossiele brandstoffen te investeren."

Dat niet alle landen er zijn, staat een succes niet in de weg, benadrukt onder meer Nederland vooraf. Het is geen VN-top, er wordt niet onderhandeld, er hoeft geen akkoord te komen. Nederland ziet het vooral als een eerste open gesprek tussen bereidwillige partners. Een soort loket waar kennis wordt uitgewisseld, en waar op termijn wellicht successen uit voortvloeien.

"Het is echt een eerste stap", zegt klimaatdeskundige Leo Meyer, die jarenlang onderhandelde voor de Nederlandse delegatie op de VN-klimaattoppen. "Zelfs als de aanwezigen goed waren geweest voor maar 10 procent van de totale CO2-uitstoot, dan nog is dat een significant signaal. Je moet niet te hoge verwachtingen scheppen. Dit is een duwtje, maar dat kan uitgroeien tot een duw waar ook de grote toppen niet omheen kunnen."

De huidige energieproblematiek onderstreept volgens Meyer ook het nut van het uitfaseren van fossiele brandstoffen. "Maar we zitten natuurlijk wel in een spagaat met de brandstoftekorten die eraan zitten te komen. Er zijn ook nog steeds plannen om aardgasvelden op de Noordzee te exploreren. Dat maakt het voor Nederland wel lastig om veel geweldige beloftes te presenteren."

De rechtbank heeft Koert H. (58) veroordeeld tot vier jaar cel voor de verwoestende brand in de binnenstad van Arnhem in maart vorig jaar. Twee andere verdachten zijn vrijgesproken.

In de nacht van 5 op 6 maart vorig jaar brak in de Arnhemse binnenstad brand uit. Het vuur sloeg een groot gat in het historische centrum. Meerdere panden, waaronder monumentale gebouwen, gingen verloren. Tientallen bewoners moesten hun huis halsoverkop verlaten.

Een paar dagen na de brand werden de drie verdachten opgepakt. Zij zouden een rolcontainer voor een pand in het centrum in brand hebben gestoken, waarna het vuur zich snel verspreidde.

Brandstichting bewezen

De rechtbank acht bewezen dat hoofdverdachte H. met een aansteker de brand heeft aangestoken. Zo heeft een van de medeverdachten verklaard dat H. met een aansteker om een aantal rolcontainers liep en een ervan in brand stak. Ook is op camerabeelden van de bewuste avond te horen dat H. zegt: "Laten we dat ding in de fik steken."

De andere twee verdachten, Ricky N. (42) en Mark V. (31), zijn vrijgesproken, zoals het Openbaar Ministerie ook al had gevraagd. Er kan niet worden aangetoond dat het tweetal heeft bijgedragen aan het ontstaan van de brand, meldt Omroep Gelderland.

'Impulsieve en asociale actie'

De straf tegen H. valt lager uit dan de strafeis van het Openbaar Ministerie. Dat eiste deze maand tien jaar cel. De rechtbank gaat hier niet in mee, onder meer omdat niet kan worden vastgesteld dat het ging om een aanslag of doelgerichte actie. "Het was een impulsieve en asociale actie die volledig uit de hand is gelopen", aldus de rechter.

Hoewel de rechter niet denkt dat het de bedoeling was van de man om zoveel vernieling aan te richten, is het volgens de rechter algemeen bekend dat "brand en rook zich snel verspreiden en zeker op deze locatie in de dichtbebouwde oude binnenstad enorme gevolgen kunnen aanrichten".

Ook neemt de rechtbank het H. kwalijk dat hij geen verantwoordelijkheid neemt voor zijn daden. Hij ontkende eerder alle betrokkenheid bij de brand. Hij gaf toe dat de uitspraken op de camerabeelden van hem waren, maar die waren volgens hem een grapje. "Ik heb geen brand gesticht", zei hij tijdens de zitting.

Naast de celstraf moet H. schadevergoedingen van in totaal ruim 200.000 euro betalen. Ook mag hij vijf jaar niet meer in Arnhem komen.

Het Thaise hooggerechtshof heeft een zaak in behandeling genomen tegen 44 oppositieleden, die in 2021 probeerden de strenge wet op het verbod van majesteitsschennis te versoepelen. Ze riskeren een levenslang verbod op het uitoefenen van een openbare functie.

De wet waar het om gaat, artikel 112, beschermt de machtige Thaise koning Rama X en zijn familie tegen kritiek. Elke vorm van belediging, smaad of bedreiging is strafbaar. Oppositieleden zeggen dat de wet voor politieke doeleinden wordt misbruikt en wordt ingezet om tegenstanders de mond te snoeren.

De 44 verdachten worden beschuldigd van een "ernstige schending" van de ethische code. Vanaf 30 juni zullen zij terechtstaan. Oppositieleider Ruengpanyawut zei vandaag op een persconferentie de zaak aan te vechten om de "democratische vertegenwoordiging" te verdedigen.

Volgende tegenslag voor oppositie

Momenteel zitten 10 van de 44 vervolgden in het Thaise parlement. Zij mogen voorlopig blijven werken, maar bij een schuldigverklaring worden ze mogelijk levenslang geweerd uit een publieke functie.

De zaak is de zoveelste tegenslag voor de People's Party, voorheen de Move Forward Party, die in 2024 werd ontbonden. De partij stond bij de laatste verkiezingen in februari van dit jaar nog voor in de peilingen, maar eindigde uiteindelijk ruim achter de Bhumjaithai Party van de conservatieve premier Anutin Charnvirakul.

285 vervolgingen

Thailand geldt als een van de strengste landen op het gebied van het verbod op majesteitsschennis, het opzettelijk beledigen van het staatshoofd. Mensenrechtenorganisaties waarschuwen al langer voor de steeds verdere inperking van de vrijheid van meningsuiting. Artikel 112 is volgens hen in strijd met internationale mensenrechtenverdragen.

Volgens de Thaise ngo Thai Lawyers for Human Rights zijn tussen juli 2020 en december 2025 zeker 285 mensen op basis van de omstreden wet vervolgd. Er worden geregeld langdurige gevangenisstraffen opgelegd.

Correspondent Zuidoost-Azië Mustafa Marghadi:

"Dit is al de derde keer dat het Constitutionele Hof in Thailand leden van deze partij en vorige incarnaties van de partij vervolgen. In 2019 werd de toenmalig leider van Future Forward geschorst en in 2020 werd de partij ontbonden.

Opvolger Move Forward en de partijleider overkwam hetzelfde in 2023 en 2024. En nu zijn ook de opvolgers daarvan aan de beurt.

Volgens mensenrechtenorganisaties en andere critici wordt dit gedaan om de progressieve partij uit te schakelen. Want de partij wil niet alleen de wetten rond majesteitsschennis versoepelen, maar ook de macht van het leger in de politiek verkleinen. Kortom, ze willen de macht van de huidige conservatieve elite aantasten. Iets wat die elite niet wil laten gebeuren. Ondanks dat een groot deel van de bevolking deze partij en de hervormingsplannen steunt."

Een "schorsing" van Spanje binnen de NAVO, heroverweging van de Britse claim op de Falklandeilanden of landen die 'moeilijk' doen hoge posten ontzeggen. Het Pentagon overweegt het allemaal in reactie op het gebrek aan steun voor de Amerikaanse aanvallen op Iran, schrijft het Britse persbureau Reuters op basis van een bron.

De anonieme bron weidt uit over een mail die zou circuleren binnen de leiding van het Amerikaanse ministerie van Defensie. Samengevat zouden daarin opties staan om "het aanmatigende gedrag van de Europeanen wat terug te brengen". De VS zou zich met name storen aan de houding van Spanje en het Verenigd Koninkrijk.

Spanje verbood de VS om voor de strijd tegen Iran gebruik te maken van het nationale luchtruim of de Amerikaanse bases in het land. Ook het VK stribbelde tegen, maar stond uiteindelijk wel toe dat bases werden gebruikt voor defensieve acties, om bijvoorbeeld Iraanse aanvallen af te slaan. Gebruikmaken van logistiek en luchtruim ziet het Pentagon "als de absolute ondergrens voor NAVO", aldus de functionaris.

Troepenverplaatsingen?

Trump speculeerde eerder al openlijk over de optie om de VS uit de NAVO terug te trekken. Dat leidde tot een grote crisis binnen het militaire bondgenootschap, omdat daarmee de belofte werd uitgehold elkaar te steunen bij een vijandige aanval. In de mail die nu rondgaat wordt een regelrecht vertrek niet genoemd.

De bron wilde niet zeggen of het een optie is om Amerikaanse troepen terug te trekken uit landen die niet genoeg meewerken in de ogen van het Witte Huis. Eerder werd gemeld dat Trump overwoog kritische landen op die manier te treffen.

Wel tot de mogelijkheden behoort een heroverweging van de overzeese claims van Europese landen, zoals die van de Britten op de Falklands. Argentinië, geleid door Trumps bondgenoot Milei, aast al decennia op die eilandengroep, wat in 1982 zelfs een oorlog tot gevolg had. Washington zou nu overwegen Londen diplomatiek te laten vallen in dat geschil.

Onduidelijkheden

Met name voor Spanje, door Trump als een grote dwarsligger gezien, wordt nagedacht over verregaande sancties. Zo wordt gesproken over een "schorsing" van het land binnen het bondgenootschap, hoewel niet precies duidelijk is of daar wel een procedure voor bestaat, hoe de VS dat zou willen doordrukken en wat het dan praktisch inhoudt.

Een lichtere variant zou het uitsluiten van sommige landen zijn bij de benoeming van hoge functies binnen de NAVO. Spanje daarbij op het strafbankje zetten zou een grote symbolische uitstraling hebben, zonder direct de militaire paraatheid aan te tasten.

NAVO-correspondent Kysia Hekster:

"Dit is precies het scenario waar ze achter de schermen bij de NAVO bang voor zijn, dat de Amerikanen individuele landen willen gaan straffen omdat ze volgens Trump niet genoeg meewerken aan de Iran-oorlog.

Het zou leiden tot verdere verdeeldheid in de militaire alliantie die toch al zo onder druk staat omdat de Amerikaanse president maar blijft roepen dat hij niets heeft aan zijn bondgenoten. Als het ene land daarvoor bestraft wordt en het andere niet, leidt dat weer tot nieuwe dilemma's, want hoe moet daar dan op gereageerd worden? De vrees is dat de onenigheid de afschrikkende werking van de club verder aantast, want het bondgenootschap moet het juist hebben van eenheid.

Volgens het NAVO-verdrag kan de VS dit soort sancties overigens helemaal niet opleggen, het bondgenootschap besluit alleen iets als alle 32 leden het eens zijn. Maar de Amerikaanse president is niet zo onder de indruk van regels, zo weten we inmiddels. Dus als hij dit echt zou willen doorzetten, is het aan topman Rutte hem op andere gedachten te brengen. In zijn laatste gesprek met Rutte over de Iran-oorlog bleek Trump echt heel boos over de NAVO, dit wordt gezien als de grootste crisis in de geschiedenis van het bondgenootschap."

Een Pentagon-woordvoerder wil niet inhoudelijk reageren op de uitgelekte beraadslagingen. Wel zegt hij dat het ministerie "de president geloofwaardige opties wil bieden om ervoor te zorgen dat onze bondgenoten geen papieren tijgers zijn, maar doen wat ze moeten doen".

De Spaanse premier Sánchez reageert op het Reuters-verhaal met de mededeling dat zijn regering zich baseert op de officiële positie van landen, niet op hun gelekte e-mails.

Basisartsen die bij het UWV in Amsterdam tot verzekeringsarts worden opgeleid, hebben te maken met een angstcultuur. Ook is de werkdruk te hoog. Dat zeggen betrokkenen tegen EenVandaag en het AD.

"Uit alles blijkt dat hier sprake is van een angstcultuur en intimidatie. We hebben regelmatig huilende collega's op de werkvloer en een schreeuwende regiearts", zegt een leidinggevende van de uitkeringsinstantie tegen EenVandaag.

"De opleiding staat onder druk en de productie gaat voor", aldus een verzekeringsarts in opleiding. Door die productiedruk voelen de artsen zich onveilig en neemt het werkplezier af. "We moeten overleven. Het is een regime."

Ook problemen op andere locaties

EenVandaag zegt dat het met een grote groep basisartsen van het UWV heeft gesproken. Ze deden hun verhaal anoniem, omdat ze bang zijn voor represailles van de UWV-leiding. De verhalen worden bevestigd door documenten die de redactie onder ogen kreeg.

Mirko Bal van de beroepsvereniging voor UWV-artsen Novag kent de geluiden ook, zegt hij tegen de NOS. "We hebben gesproken met een heel grote groep artsen uit Amsterdam, dat daar flinke problemen zijn wat betreft de veiligheid van het opleidingsklimaat en dat ze zich onvoldoende kunnen uitspreken over de kwaliteit van de opleiding en dat veiligheidsklimaat."

Wachtlijsten wegwerken

UWV-artsen beoordelen in hoeverre werknemers die langer dan twee jaar ziek zijn arbeidsongeschikt zijn en of ze een WIA-uitkering kunnen krijgen. Al enige tijd kampt de organisatie met een tekort aan artsen. Om de wachtlijsten weg te werken worden ook verzekeringsartsen in opleiding ingezet. De verzekeringsartsen in opleiding doen feitelijk de helft van het werk, aldus EenVandaag.

"Wat daarbij uit het oog verloren wordt is dat deze collega's bezig zijn met het vak te leren en ze daar natuurlijk ook tijd en ruimte voor nodig hebben", aldus Bal. "Cliënten hebben recht op een zorgvuldige beoordeling. Daarvoor zal je toch het vak goed moeten leren voordat je die beoordelingen ook echt op een zorgvuldige wijze kunt doen."

Stoppen met de opleiding kunnen deze artsen niet zo eenvoudig. "In de studieovereenkomst die met het UWV getekend moet worden, staat dat artsen de studiekosten moeten terugbetalen als ze voortijdig stoppen met de opleiding of binnen twee jaar na het afronden weggaan. Dat kan oplopen tot 70.000 euro."

Verscherpt toezicht

Het UWV stond al onder verscherpt toezicht van de toezichthouder voor geneeskundige vervolgopleidingen RGS. Naar aanleiding van de signalen over de angstcultuur stelt deze commissie een nieuw onderzoek in, niet alleen bij het UWV in Amsterdam maar ook bij andere UWV-vestigingen.

In het uiterste geval kan de uitkomst zijn dat het UWV zijn bevoegdheid om basisartsen tot verzekeringsarts op te leiden kwijtraakt. Dat zou betekenen dat de artsen in opleiding niet meer beschikbaar zijn voor het wegwerken van de wachtlijsten.

Reactie UWV en minister

In een reactie erkent het UWV dat de werkdruk hoog is. "Er wachten te veel mensen te lang op een beoordeling die hoort bij een WIA-uitkering. Hierdoor zitten tienduizenden mensen in onzekerheid en neemt de druk op medewerkers toe."

In de reactie zegt het UWV ook dat het de signalen over een onveilig werkklimaat zeer serieus neemt. Er zijn al gesprekken gevoerd met de betrokken medewerkers, Novag, de ondernemingsraad en het management "want verbeteringen zijn altijd nodig".

Minister Vijlbrief van Sociale Zaken en Werkgelegenheid zegt de signalen over de angstcultuur en werkdruk zeer serieus te nemen. "Ik begrijp dat het UWV heeft aangekondigd dat ze dit grondig gaan onderzoeken. Dat is een goede zaak", zegt hij tegen EenVandaag. Hij heeft de raad van bestuur opdracht geven om een plan op te stellen voor verbetering van de organisatiecultuur.

Een sergeant-majoor van de Amerikaanse Special Forces is opgepakt omdat hij met voorkennis weddenschappen afsloot op de val van de Venezolaanse president Maduro. De 38-jarige Gannon Ken Van Dyke won daar in januari 400.000 dollar mee. Het is de eerste keer dat vervolging wordt ingesteld tegen een gebruiker van een site waarmee op uiteenlopende wereldgebeurtenissen kan worden gegokt.

"We vertrouwen onze mannen en vrouwen in uniform geheime informatie toe zodat ze hun missie veilig en effectief kunnen uitvoeren", reageert interim-minister van Justitie Blanche op de zaak. "Ze mogen die enorm gevoelige informatie niet gebruiken voor persoonlijk gewin."

Volgens een toezichthouder heeft de militair de nationale veiligheid op het spel gezet en zijn collega's in gevaar gebracht.

Flink ingezet

Van Dyke was sinds begin december betrokken bij de planning en uitvoering van de Amerikaanse gevangenneming van Maduro. Details over zijn rol zijn niet naar buiten gebracht. Wel is duidelijk dat hij door zijn werk toegang had tot hoogst geheime informatie over de commandoactie.

Tussen 30 december en 2 januari zette Van Dyke in totaal 32.500 dollar in op de voorspelling dat Maduro voor 31 januari ten val zou zijn gebracht. Vooral kort voor de eerste raketten insloegen in Caracas zette hij flink in. Het was waarnemers destijds al opgevallen dat iemand flink had verdiend aan de totaal onverwachte actie tegen Maduro.

Wedsites als Polymarket en Kalshi liggen onder vuur omdat verboden handel met voorkennis veel geld kan opleveren. Gebruikers kunnen er gokken op diverse ontwikkelingen, van simpele sportuitslagen of de weersverwachting, tot ontwikkelingen in het wereldnieuws, zoals hoelang de Straat van Hormuz dicht blijft. Deze vorm van termijnhandel nam een enorme vlucht na de herverkiezing van president Trump.

Verdachte transacties

Van Dyke lijkt niet de enige te zijn geweest die een informatievoorsprong te gelde heeft gemaakt. Eerder deze maand wisten zeker vijftig nieuwe Polymarket-accounts juist te voorspellen dat Trump een staakt-het-vuren met Iran zou aankondigen, vaak slechts enkele minuten voordat het nieuws wereldkundig werd gemaakt.

Ook verdiende een gebruiker in februari ruim een half miljoen dollar door correct te voorspellen dat de Iraanse leider Ali Khamenei niet lang meer aan de macht zou zijn. Onderzoekers van Harvard berekenden vorige maand dat wellicht 143 miljoen dollar aan winst op de site voortkomt uit handelen met voorkennis. Critici noemen het daarnaast onkies dat er winst kan worden gemaakt door iemands dood te voorspellen.

Polymarket zelf zegt dat deze praktijken niet zijn toegelaten. "De arrestatie van vandaag bewijst dat het systeem werkt." Kalshi gaf eerder deze week drie Amerikaanse politici een boete omdat ze hadden ingezet op hun eigen verkiezingswinst.

'Wereld is een casino geworden'

President Trump reageerde laconiek op de strafzaak. "Helaas is de hele wereld een casino geworden", zei hij tegen de pers. De zaak deed hem denken aan het schandaal rond honkballer Pete Rose. "Die gokte ook op zijn eigen team. Het zou slechter zijn geweest als hij tegen hen had gewed."

Trumps oudste zoon is betrokken bij beide goksites, die de marktleiders in de sector zijn: hij heeft geïnvesteerd in Polymarket en is betaald adviseur bij Kalshi.

Van Dyke is aangeklaagd voor onder meer het gebruik van overheidsinformatie voor persoonlijk gewin en fraude. Daarnaast loopt er een civiele zaak tegen hem bij beurswaakhond CFTC. Van Dyke kan een jarenlange celstraf krijgen. Er zijn op Polymarket vooralsnog geen weddenschappen afgesloten op hoelang precies.

De laatste hoge hekken worden neergezet bij het asielopvang- en detentiecentrum Limnes in het zuiden van Cyprus. De wipwaps voor de kinderen zijn in plastic verpakt, de ijzeren stapelbedden staan onder het bouwstof op de binnenplaatsen tussen de nog lege woonblokken.

Het kamp is grotendeels gefinancierd met EU-geld. Als het later dit jaar helemaal opengaat, is in het opvangdeel plek voor duizend asielzoekers. Het land waar de EU-staatshoofden en regeringsleiders bij elkaar zijn voor een top, is trots op zijn strenge asiel- en terugkeerbeleid.

In Cyprus werken ze deels al met de strengere Europese regels voor asiel die in juni ingaan. Nu de strengere Nederlandse asielplannen deze week strandden in de Eerste Kamer, kijken politici met extra belangstelling naar die nieuwe EU-wetten.

De bedoeling is dat asielzoekers straks aan de buitengrenzen van Europa snel verdeeld worden in twee groepen: mensen die meer of minder kans maken op bescherming. Die laatsten zijn bijvoorbeeld migranten die uit zogenoemde veilige landen komen, ze kunnen worden opgesloten terwijl ze de uitkomst van hun procedure afwachten. Ook families met kinderen komen in deze detentiecentra terecht.

Frontlijnlidstaat

In het gesloten deel van het kamp Limnes is plek voor 800 gedetineerden. Het ging al eerder dit jaar open, er zitten nu ongeveer 100 mensen vast die terug moeten. De eerste ervaringen van de Cypriotische regering met de regels die binnen twee maanden voor de hele EU gelden, zijn positief.

Hoewel er zorgen zijn dat het pact gaat uitlopen op een mislukking, biedt het volgens staatssecretaris van Migratie Nikolas Ioannides juist grote voordelen voor de hele Unie, zegt hij in een interview met de NOS. "Maar vooral Cyprus als frontlijnlidstaat, als toegangspoort tot Europa, gaat het helpen om migratie op een doeltreffende manier aan te pakken."

Cyprus is volgens de Europese Commissie een van de vier EU-landen met "hoge migratiedruk". Dat betekent dat ze volgens de nieuwe regels ook andere landen kunnen vragen asielzoekers over te nemen, een soort Europese spreidingswet. Nederland liet, net als veel andere landen, eerder al weten dat niet te gaan doen. In plaats daarvan betaalt ons land 20.000 euro per asielzoeker, bestemd voor de landen waar ze opgevangen worden.

Staatssecretaris Ioannides snapt dat andere landen niet staan te springen om meer asielzoekers. "Dat is niet verplicht", zegt hij. "Maar het is wel verplicht iets te doen, zoals financiële of andere hulp geven." In het asiel- en migratiepact heet dit "verplichte solidariteit" met landen waar asielzoekers aankomen en opvangen.

Cyprus pronkt graag met hoge terugkeercijfers voor afgewezen asielzoekers. In de hele EU gaat gemiddeld ongeveer een op de vijf terug, op het eiland met ongeveer een miljoen inwoners claimen ze dat voor iedere asielzoeker die aankomt, er vijf teruggestuurd worden.

Volgens Ioannides is dat te danken aan een mix van vrijwillige en gedwongen terugkeer. Hij heeft een presentatie over zijn beleid gegeven aan de andere Europese landen en hoopt dat het succes van Cyprus het succes van de hele Europese Unie kan worden.

Achterstallig onderhoud

Volgens Corina Drousiotou van de Cypriotische vluchtelingenorganisatie Refugee Council is er wel wat af te dingen op dat succesverhaal. "We zijn een eiland. Als je hier wordt afgewezen dan kan je nergens anders heen. Dat kan je niet zomaar vergelijken met andere landen."

"Bovendien, de overheid heeft de procedures jarenlang laten versloffen, eindelijk zijn ze nu bezig met dat achterstallige onderhoud. Omdat tegelijkertijd inmiddels veel minder asielzoekers naar Cyprus komen, is het niet zo moeilijk meer mensen weg te sturen dan aankomen."

Ze is ook kritisch over het uitzetten van werkkrachten. "We hebben juist veel buitenlanders nodig om onze economie draaiende te houden, we hebben te weinig mensen hier om al het werk te doen. Tussen al die uitgezette migranten zitten er veel die werkten en hun bijdrage leverden aan onze maatschappij. Die moeten we nu weer gaan vervangen, dus het is een beetje lood om oud ijzer."

Met de nieuwe EU-regels wordt het mogelijk uitgeprocedeerde mensen terug te sturen naar 'terugkeerhubs', in landen buiten de EU, waaraan lidstaten geld geven en waar ze afspraken mee maken. Migratieminister Van den Brink zei vorige maand in een kopgroep te zitten die daarover verkennende gesprekken voert, tot nu toe zijn voor zover bekend nog geen overeenkomsten gesloten.

Het is de bedoeling dat in het nieuwe pact ook het tempo van de verschillende onderdelen van de asielprocedure flink omhooggaat. Maar Europese vluchtelingenorganisaties hebben er een hard hoofd in dat het overheden gaat lukken de zelfopgelegde deadlines te halen.

"Die zijn zo strak", waarschuwt Corina Drousiotou van de Cyprus Refugee Council. "Ik heb er niet veel vertrouwen in dat het gaat lukken. Zeker omdat het pact ook eisen stelt aan de kwaliteit van de procedures en de rechten van migranten."

Goedemorgen! In het Colombiaanse Santa Marta begint een zesdaagse conferentie over de afbouw van fossiele brandstoffen en duizenden mensen krijgen een koninklijke onderscheiding, op de laatste werkdag voor Koningsdag.

De top van Mount Everest is voorlopig onbereikbaar door een groot ijsblok van een gletsjer. Die blokkeert de route naar het hoogste punt ter wereld. Volgens de autoriteiten in Nepal zit er niets anders op dan te wachten tot het ijs gesmolten is.

Het blok ligt op zo'n 6000 meter hoogte, een kleine 3 kilometer onder de top. Kenners verwachten dat er mogelijk files kunnen ontstaan onderweg naar boven. Dat kan leiden tot gevaarlijke situaties, door het gebrek aan zuurstof op die hoogte.

In de buurt van Weert is afgelopen nacht een vrouw om het leven gekomen door een auto-ongeluk. De auto botste met hoge snelheid frontaal op een boom. Op foto's is te zien dat de auto in tweeën is gescheurd en het motorblok eruit is geslingerd.

Hulpdiensten hebben tevergeefs geprobeerd om het leven van de vrouw te redden. De andere inzittende is voor controle naar het ziekenhuis gebracht. Het is niet bekend hoe die persoon eraantoe is. De politie kan nog niet zeggen wie van de twee reed.

De melding van het ongeval even ten zuidwesten van Weert kwam rond 01.00 uur binnen bij de hulpdiensten.

Hoewel het piekseizoen is voor bergbeklimmers op Mount Everest kan voorlopig niemand het hoogste punt van de wereld bereiken. Een instabiel brok ijs van een gletsjer belemmert de weg. De Nepalese autoriteiten zeggen dat er weinig anders opzit dan wachten tot het ijs instort.

Er wordt gevreesd dat klimmers later in het seizoen weer in de rij moeten staan om de top te bereiken. De situatie heeft nu al tot wekenlange vertragingen geleid, schrijft de Britse omroep BBC. Het dertig meter hoge blok ijs ligt net onder Kamp 1, dat op ongeveer 6000 meter hoogte ligt. De top ligt bijna drie kilometer hoger.

Honderden klimvergunningen verleend

Volgens de Nepalese krant The Kathmandu Post hebben dit jaar ruim 400 mensen een vergunning gekregen om Mount Everest te beklimmen. Daarmee zou 2026 in de buurt komen van recordjaar 2023, toen 479 bergbeklimmers de top mochten proberen te bereiken. Dat jaar kwamen zeker zeventien klimmers om het leven.

"De vertraging in het openen van de route heeft de vrees voor mogelijke 'files' op weg naar de top verhoogd", zegt bergbeklimmer Purnima Shrestha tegen de BBC. De periode waarin de berg kan worden beklommen is beperkt. Bij vertraging moeten mensen dichter achter elkaar hun beklimming wagen.

Maatregelen genomen

In 2019 ging een foto de wereld over van klimmers die massaal in de rij staan om de top van Mount Everest te bereiken. Deze situatie is levensgevaarlijk door de extreme hoogte en beperkte hoeveelheid zuurstof die klimmers hebben.

Nepal heeft de afgelopen jaren maatregelen genomen om het aantal bergbeklimmers en ongelukken op de beroemde berg terug te dringen. Zo is er een wet geïntroduceerd die klimmers verplicht om eerst een andere bergtop van ruim 7000 meter te beklimmen voordat ze aan de hoogste beginnen. Sinds vorig jaar krijgen sherpa's ook hulp van drones.

Het Amerikaanse techbedrijf Meta gaat wereldwijd zo'n 10 procent van zijn werknemers ontslaan. Daarmee belanden zo'n 8000 medewerkers van het moederbedrijf achter Instagram, Facebook en WhatsApp op straat. Het personeel krijgt over een maand te horen wie wordt ontslagen en wie mag blijven.

Het massaontslag werd als eerste gemeld door persbureau Bloomberg en later bevestigd door de techgigant. Het besluit heeft te maken met de opkomst van kunstmatige intelligentie (AI). Enerzijds gaat Meta vele miljarden extra investeren in nieuwe datacentra. Anderzijds neemt AI taken over van medewerkers.

Oplopend tot 135 miljard dollar

Meta verwacht dat het dit jaar tussen de 115 miljard en 135 miljard dollar uitgeeft. Dat is bijna een verdubbeling ten opzichte van de investeringen vorig jaar. De top van het bedrijf meent dat dit nodig is om de concurrentie bij te houden.

Naast het massaontslag zal Meta ook geen nieuwe mensen aannemen voor de 6000 functies die op dit moment openstaan.

'Microsoft wil contracten afkopen'

Persbureau Reuters meldt dat ook techbedrijf Microsoft fors in de personeelskosten wil snijden. Volgens anonieme bronnen ligt er een plan om zo'n 8750 medewerkers aan te bieden hun contract af te kopen. Dat komt neer op zo'n 7 procent van het wereldwijde personeel. Het bedrijf heeft deze informatie niet bevestigd.

Het staakt-het-vuren tussen Libanon en Israël wordt met drie weken verlengd. President Trump heeft dat bekendgemaakt op sociale media, na overleg in het Witte Huis met de ambassadeurs van beide landen.

De Libanese Hezbollah-militie, de partij waarmee Israël in gevecht is, was niet bij het overleg aanwezig. Hezbollah stelt zich tot nu toe op het standpunt dat ze het recht heeft zich te verzetten tegen de Israëlische bezetting in het zuiden van Libanon.

De Israëlische ambassadeur zei na afloop van de ontmoeting in het Witte Huis dat vernietiging van Hezbollah voorop moet staan bij de onderhandelingen en niet de terugtrekking van het Israëlische leger uit Libanon.

Het tijdelijke bestand was vorige week ingesteld voor een periode van tien dagen en zou morgen aflopen. Het staakt-het-vuren werd sindsdien geregeld geschonden door zowel Hezbollah als het Israëlische leger.

'Vredesakkoord is mogelijk'

Trump zei dat hij op korte termijn de Israëlische premier Netanyahu en Libanese president Aoun wil ontvangen in de VS. De Amerikaanse president beweerde tegenover journalisten dat het mogelijk is om dit jaar een vredesakkoord te sluiten.

Het zou historisch zijn als Netanyahu en Aoun elkaar ontmoeten: de twee buurlanden hebben al decennia geen diplomatieke betrekkingen met elkaar. Het was al uitzonderlijk toen eerder deze maand ambassadeurs van Libanon en Israël elkaar spraken in Washington.

De afgelopen dag hebben opnieuw vertegenwoordigers van de twee buurlanden elkaar ontmoet in het Witte Huis. President Trump, vicepresident Vance en minister van Buitenlandse Zaken Rubio waren er ook bij aanwezig. "Het was een grote eer om deel te nemen aan deze zeer historische bijeenkomst", zegt Trump in een verklaring op zijn platform Truth Social.

Aanvallen over en weer

Ondanks het bestand werden gisteren alsnog beschietingen gemeld. Israël stelt dat het drie strijders van Hezbollah heeft gedood in Zuid-Libanon. Hezbollah heeft raketten gelanceerd richting Israël, naar eigen zeggen als reactie op schendingen van het bestand door Israël.

Het Israëlische leger houdt een deel van Zuid-Libanon bezet. Netanyahu lijkt dit gebied effectief te gaan annexeren. Dat is volgens hem nodig om Israël veilig te houden tegen aanvallen van Hezbollah. Het Israëlische leger richt verwoestingen aan in het bezette gebied en verbiedt burgers om terug te keren.

In een nationaal park in Italië zijn in een week tijd zeker achttien wolven dood gevonden. Het Nationaal Park Abruzzen, Lazio en Molise vermoedt dat de dieren zijn vergiftigd door boeren. Ook andere dieren zijn dood gevonden, waaronder drie vossen en een buizerd.

Het is niet de eerste keer dat dit gebeurt. In 2023 werden negen wolven dood gevonden in het natuurgebied.

"We zijn teleurgesteld en wanhopig, en ons gevoel gaat op en neer tussen diep lijden en ongeloof", schrijft het park in een emotionele verklaring. "We hopen dat we niet nog meer slecht nieuws krijgen en dat dit dramatische verhaal geen vervolg krijgt", aldus de beheerders.

Sterk vermoeden

Het park vermoedt dat er vergiftigd aas is gebruikt om de dieren te doden. Vorige week werden al tien dode wolven en mogelijk lokaas gevonden. Daar kwamen woensdag nog zeven kadavers bij.

De dieren zijn aangetroffen in verschillende delen van het park. Volgens de beheerders vertonen ze vergelijkbare sporen, die allemaal duiden op vergifting. Het is alarmerend, zegt het park, dat erop hamert dat het strafbaar is. "Wat de motivatie ook is, illegaliteit en criminaliteit zijn op geen enkele manier te rechtvaardigen."

Zorgen om bruine beer

Het Nationaal Park Abruzzen, Lazio en Molise is een van de bekendste nationale parken van Italië. Het ligt in het midden van het land, tussen Rome en Napels, en heeft een oppervlakte van ongeveer 500 vierkante kilometer. Er leven veel verschillende soorten, waaronder haviken, lynxen en herten.

Ook de zogenoemde Marsicaanse bruine beer komt er voor, die wordt gezien als symbool van het natuurpark. Het Wereld Natuur Fonds in Italië maakt zich ernstig zorgen over het voortbestaan van de bedreigde beer. Er leven nog maar enkele tientallen exemplaren in het park.

Ook het WWF toont zich aangeslagen en spreekt van een wolvenbloedbad. "Het is een terugkeer naar tijden waarin wilde dieren louter werden gezien als bedreiging die moest worden uitgeroeid", schrijft de organisatie op zijn website.

Controles opgeschroefd

Na de vondst van vorige week is een strafrechtelijk onderzoek ingesteld. "Beren en wolven zijn symbolen van dit gebied. We nemen hun dood niet licht op", zegt de officier van justitie die het onderzoek leidt. In de eerste gevallen lijkt het er al op dat het inderdaad om vergiftiging gaat, maar meer onderzoek is nodig.

Ook de milieuminister Pichetto keurt het gebeurde af en noemt de vergiftigingen gruwelijk. Hij heeft aangekondigd dat de controles in het gebied zijn opgeschroefd.

Er leven naar schatting ruim 3000 wilde wolven in Italië. Daarmee is het binnen de Europese Unie het land met de meeste wolven.

Some of you may have seen news about California’s AB-1043, the “Digital Age Assurance Act,” (DAAA) and are wondering what it means for AlmaLinux. To help answer that, I want to share what we know and where we stand.

What we think

Whether or not we like this legislation (we don’t) we believe that the DAAA may require operating systems to implement digital age verification, and communicate the results of this verification to applications working on top of our AlmaLinux. The DAAA requires implementation of its requirements by January 1, 2027.

ELevate NG (the development branch of ELevate) now supports the upgrade path from AlmaLinux OS 9 to AlmaLinux OS 10 (or AlmaLinux OS Kitten) x86_64_v2. We need your help to verify that the upgrade works smoothly. Please give it a try and report your results!

Caution: Do not use it on production machines. We highly recommend making backups and/or snapshots of your system before proceeding, and performing a trial run in a sandbox first.

We have added i686 support to AlmaLinux OS Kitten 10 — package repositories and official container images for 32-bit x86. There is no installer ISO for i686; this is only about userspace. If you have used i686 packages on AlmaLinux 8 or 9, the setup is the same.

Why ship i686

32-bit x86 has not gone away. Software that only ships as i686, CI pipelines that need a specific 32-bit glibc, containers that should look like a normal distro but for linux/386 — all of these still exist and still need a maintained package set behind them.

RISC-V is a free and open instruction set architecture (ISA) based on RISC principles. Unlike proprietary ISAs such as x86 or ARM, the RISC-V specification is openly available, allowing anyone to implement it without licensing fees. Hardware platforms based on RISC-V are becoming more widely available, from microcontrollers to application-class processors capable of running full Linux distributions.

We are excited to announce that AlmaLinux OS Kitten 10 is now available for the RISC-V architecture.

For years, firewalld users across multiple Linux distributions have been hitting a painful performance issue: reloading the firewall with large ipsets (10,000+ entries) and the nftables backend takes minutes instead of seconds, often causing network disruption. The problem has been reported upstream as well as in Debian, Red Hat Bugzilla, and by our community. We’ve investigated the root cause, developed a fix, and submitted it upstream where it has already been merged. Now we need your help testing the patched package for AlmaLinux 8 before releasing it to production.

Today we’re rolling out AlmaLinux Astra: a new self-service platform for identity, organizations, memberships, and elections for the AlmaLinux OS Foundation.

Astra is built to keep workflows clear, accountable, and easy to audit. It helps contributors and communities move from “who are you?” to “you can participate” with fewer manual handoffs and more transparent status updates.

Astra will replace the current Noggin-based system at https://accounts.almalinux.org. It’s inspired by Noggin, but built entirely from scratch using Django.

Every year, around FOSDEM, the AlmaLinux SIG leaders, ALESCo members, and board members are invited to attend the AlmaLinux Leadership Summit. The goal of the summit is to get everyone in a room to have discussions around the major problems we’re facing, ensure that what we’re doing in the year to come is focused on our goals, work out any friction between SIGs, and make sure that everyone in leadership is united around what we want to accomplish. Last August we started shipping NVIDIA’s open GPU kernel modules, and saw incredible amounts of adoption and excitement about that announcement!

Today we are excited to share that with the release of version 13.2, NVIDIA has added official support for enterprise Linux compatible distributions, including AlmaLinux, to CUDA. That means that users of NVIDIA hardware can receive support for NVIDIA drivers and CUDA on AlmaLinux within NVIDIA’s supported configurations.

We are also excited to be able to ship NVIDIA’s CUDA drivers in an official AlmaLinux repository - streamlining updates and uses of NVIDIA for AlmaLinux users worldwide.

We have updated the shim bootloader to version 16.1 for AlmaLinux 9.7 and 10.1, following the same pattern that users will see in RHEL releases. This update includes a change in the UEFI Secure Boot signing key for the aarch64 (ARM64) architecture that our users should be aware of.

What is shim?

For those unfamiliar, shim is an open-source bootloader that acts as a bridge between the UEFI firmware and the operating system during the boot process. It is essential for Secure Boot support, as it verifies the signature of the boot loader before loading the operating system. You can learn more about how AlmaLinux handles Secure Boot in our earlier blog post.

Announcing Btrfs support in AlmaLinux OS 10.1

AlmaLinux OS 10.1 will support the Btrfs filesystem, which has already been available in AlmaLinux OS Kitten since early September.

What is Btrfs?

Btrfs is a modern Copy-on-Write (CoW) filesystem implementing advanced features while also focusing on fault tolerance, repair and easy administration. Among other things, it provides snapshotting, built-in volume management, checksumming for data and metadata, transparent compression and efficient copying via reflinks. These features lead to better performance for most common workloads and stronger resistance against bitrot and other potential issues with the underlying storage medium. Btrfs is already supported by a variety of Linux distributions, and is the default filesystem for several of them, notably Fedora Linux and openSUSE.

We have identified some inconsistencies within our internal guidelines that could potentially call into question the current election. To ensure that we are properly aligning our processes, bylaws, and committee guidelines, we are canceling the current election and rescheduling it for March of 2026.

The inconsistencies

Last week, the membership committee identified a potential problem in the way that we handled the nominations for this election, specifically with regard to who did the nominating. We also identified some problems with how we renewed memberships for existing members earlier this year.

AlmaLinux OS 10 will have the CRB repository turned on by default via an update in AlmaLinux OS 10.0 on 2025-09-09, while AlmaLinux OS Kitten 10 has had it enabled by default since the update on 2025-08-27 (almalinux-kitten-repos-10.0-9.el10.0.1).

As part of our efforts to continue improving the experience for AlmaLinux users, we are enabling the CRB repository by default. This reduces the friction in using software from Fedora Extra Packages from Enterprise Linux (EPEL).

At long last, users of NVIDIA graphics cards can enjoy a drastically improved user experience with AlmaLinux.

When AlmaLinux started just 5 years ago, this wouldn’t have been possible. However, with NVIDIA releasing an open source version of their graphics drivers, things changed. This open source version is slowly becoming the flagship driver, with new products being added exclusively to it.

AlmaLinux’s NVIDIA support - including Secure Boot

AlmaLinux OS 9 and 10 now ship packages enabling native NVIDIA Open GPU driver support - with Secure Boot. Thanks to ALESCo, the NVIDIA Open GPU Kernel module, and this approved RFC, AlmaLinux 9 and 10 solve many pain points of NVIDIA users by shipping NVIDIA’s open source graphics driver as a kernel module, along with a repository config for many of the common userspace and CUDA components. With AlmaLinux 9 and 10 and the new NVIDIA packages, a few dnf commands are all that stand between users and a fully-integrated NVIDIA experience.

In March, ALESCo approved a proposal to build EPEL packages from Fedora’s source RPMs (SRPMs) to maintain long-term feature parity for our x86_64_v2 support initiative. Last month, these packages became available for AlmaLinux Kitten 10, and today we are happy to announce that x86_64_v2 EPEL support is now available for AlmaLinux 10 Stable as well.

The EPEL package builds for AlmaLinux OS 10 stable are now complete and ready for use!

How It Works

We monitor the EPEL repository for the latest stable packages, grab their SRPMs, and rebuild them using the AlmaLinux Build System. These rebuilt packages are signed with a dedicated GPG key and then released to a dedicated repository.

Yesterday, Qualys published details about a vulnerability discovered in the libblockdev package. Two vulnerabilities were announced, CVE-2025-6018 and CVE-2025-6019. AlmaLinux is not impacted by CVE-2025-6018, but we are impacted by CVE-2025-6019.

Without the impact of CVE-2025-6018 the vulnerability in libblockdev (CVE-2025-6019) is arguably less critical, but it is impactful nonetheless.

The second (CVE-2025-6019) affects libblockdev, is exploitable via the udisks daemon included by default on most Linux distributions, and allows an “allow_active” user to gain full root privileges. Although CVE-2025-6019 on its own requires existing allow_active context, chaining it with CVE-2025-6018 enables a purely unprivileged attacker to achieve full root access.

Update June 18 2025 20:00 UTC: The patches for all verisons have been published into stable repositories. A normal dnf upgrade or dnf upgrade open-vm-tools will pull in the updates.

About a month ago Broadcom (VMWare) released a security advisory for CVE-2025-22247 impacting the open-vm-tools package commonly installed inside of virtual machines on VMWare hypervisors.

VMware Tools contains an insecure file handling vulnerability. VMware has evaluated the severity of this issue to be in the Moderate severity range with a maximum CVSSv3 base score of 6.1.

AlmaLinux provides a variety of cloud images that are now updated to the AlmaLinux OS 9.6 version including:

• Oracle Cloud Infrastructure

Container images are updated to the 9.6 version as well:

• You can get official Docker images and OCI Images from Quay.io. You can also get container images from GitHub packages

Last October, when we announced AlmaLinux OS Kitten, we also announced that we would be providing support for x86_64_v2 chips for the AlmaLinux OS 10 lifecycle.

We know that many users of AlmaLinux rely on Fedora EPEL for tools and packages outside the base set of packages included in AlmaLinux OS releases. Historically, our users have been able to rely on the Fedora project entirely for those packages. However, EPEL builds against RHEL, and with RHEL 10 moving to support only x86_64_v3, EPEL will no longer cover x86_64_v2 use-cases for version 10.

I’m excited to share some great news for users running AlmaLinux OS on Windows Subsystem for Linux (WSL).

You can now install AlmaLinux OS images directly via the WSL CLI tool - no extra configuration and without having to navigate the Microsoft Store interface to install it! This change also makes it possible to install AlmaLinux on Windows Server, where the Store isn’t available.

What’s New?

Previously, installing AlmaLinux on WSL required Microsoft Store. With this update, you can install the needed AlmaLinux OS directly from the CLI tool using a simple command:

AlmaLinux OS Kitten 10 is now available for Raspberry Pi

As you might have already noticed, AlmaLinux OS Kitten 10 is now available for Raspberry Pi! Visit AlmaLinux OS Kitten 10 page for details.

Both the console image and the GNOME image are available, as with previous versions; however, the MBR version has been omitted to reduce development effort. Therefore, only images with a GUID partition table are available in AlmaLinux OS Kitten 10. That means that the Raspberry Pi 3+ will not be supported for AlmaLinux OS 10 or AlmaLinux OS Kitten 10.

Hello everyone! We’ve got ELevate Project updates to share.

The ELevate Project currently follows 3 stages for delivering updates:

• New upgrade paths, features, bug fixes, and new versions of leapp-repository and leapp-data are first introduced in ELevate NG. The AlmaLinux Team, along with the community, tests these enhancements.
• ELevate NG then moves to general Testing, during which it gathers additional data, features, and improvements.
• Once these updates are thoroughly tested and approved, the AlmaLinux Team releases them to ELevate Stable.

Today’s changes are available in ELevate NG and ELevate Testing. We expect them to be released to Stable after the general availability of AlmaLinux OS 10 Stable.

UPDATE March 17th, 2025 - these patches have now been released to production for AlmaLinux users.

The Announcement

On Monday Meta announced a flaw in FreeType versions 2.13.0 and below that can allow remote code execution.

From the announcement:

An out of bounds write exists in FreeType versions 2.13.0 and below (newer versions of FreeType are not vulnerable) when attempting to parse font subglyph structures related to TrueType GX and variable font files. The vulnerable code assigns a signed short value to an unsigned long and then adds a static value causing it to wrap around and allocate too small of a heap buffer. The code then writes up to 6 signed long integers out of bounds relative to this buffer. This may result in arbitrary code execution. This vulnerability may have been exploited in the wild.

Earlier this week Qualys announced two critical vulnerabilities for OpenSSH - CVE-2025-26465 and 2025-26466. We are looking for helping testing the patches for CVE-2025-26465.

The Qualys Threat Research Unit (TRU) has identified two vulnerabilities in OpenSSH. The first, tracked as CVE-2025-26465, allows an active machine-in-the-middle attack on the OpenSSH client when the VerifyHostKeyDNS option is enabled. The second, CVE-2025-26466, affects both the OpenSSH client and server, enabling a pre-authentication denial-of-service attack.

Security researchers at Google, namely Pedro Gallegos, Simon Scannell, and Jasiel Spelman, identified vulnerabilities in both the rsync server and client. These vulnerabilities range from extremely concerning to just annoying, and are at different stages of being patched. This blog post will be updated as patches are released by us.

The Announcement

The server vulnerabilities (CVE-2024-12084 and CVE-2024-12085) can lead to remote code execution (RCE). On the client side, vulnerabilities allow a malicious server to read arbitrary files (CVE-2024-12086), create unsafe symlinks (CVE-2024-12087), and, under certain conditions, overwrite arbitrary files (CVE-2024-12088). Additionally, during the coordinated response to these issues, Aleksei Gorban reported a sixth vulnerability (CVE-2024-12747) related to how the rsync server manages symlinks.

  • Added nfs-utils package to enable built-in support for mounting Amazon Elastic File System (EFS) or any NFS filesystems.

  • New langpacks-en package to add en_US.UTF-8 setting it as a default locale.
• OpenNebula
  • New langpacks-en package to add en_US.UTF-8 setting it as a default locale.
• Microsoft Azure
  • New langpacks-en package to add en_US.UTF-8 setting it as a default locale.
  • Added sos and tcpdump packages for troubleshooting and log collection tools.
  • Added nfs-utils and cifs-utils packages to support mounting NFS and SMB file shares from Azure Files or any NFS and SMB filesystems.

Back in October 2024 AlmaLinux OS Foundation officially introduced AlmaLinux OS Kitten 10. It is designed as a development-focused distribution of AlmaLinux OS, and a stable preview of AlmaLinux OS 10. Today we’re excited to share the latest updates in this project!

Updated packages and ISOs

Recently, the CentOS Stream 10 undertook a significant mass package rebuild to update the compiler keys used for PowerPC (ppc64le) compilation. We have also rebuilt all packages to align with these critical changes.

This year Buenos Aires became a center of the IT technical community in Latin America with an event which became a beacon for technical enthusiasts, entrepreneurs, students and professionals - Nerdearla, and I was honored to volunteer in this event - presenting AlmaLinux to a crowd that turned out to be massive, diverse, and passionate about open-source technology.

It can be quite interesting to tell you why I eventually decided to become a volunteer at this event. I have a great passion for technology, and a love of the open-source community. I strongly believe in the power of collaboration and cooperation especially between a diverse group of people. AlmaLinux, being a community-driven open-source project, resonates with me deeply, and I wanted to find a way to contribute in any way I could! Even before I got to Nerdearla, I felt the incredible excitement of the intelligent minds coming together to do something new in a creative way, which eventually appears to be a highly-demanded product. And as a newcomer to Argentina, I was tempted to join a new event as well.

Since we started building AlmaLinux directly from the sources that Red Hat uses for Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL), we have been able to deliver bug fixes and security patches faster than ever before for our community. After a long wait (view the previous blog post), the AlmaLinux 9.2 kernel received FIPS validation making it the first software implementation to receive a FIPS 140-3 ESV certificate using SHA3-256 as a conditioner. It’s also the first EL9 distribution to get a FIPS 140-3 certificate for the kernel. View the certificate here.

After months of work, we are happy to announce the AlmaLinux Certification Special Interest Group (SIG), along with our Hardware Certification Program! This SIG has tangible goals and immediate benefits for all users of AlmaLinux, and tons of ways to get involved.

bootc is a new deployment method that powers Image mode for RHEL and HeliumOS, a new Linux distribution. We are excited to announce that AlmaLinux now offers bootc images for Intel/AMD(x86_64) and ARM64(AArch4).

How did this start?

My goal as developer of HeliumOS is to produce a Linux-based desktop operating system that is user-friendly, stable, and reliable. The first foray towards this goal used a Debian base, however this had some issues:

• Debian has 3-5 years of support. Though stable relative to most Linux distributions, I wanted more stability.
• An unexpected interruption during a traditional Linux package manager update can render the system un-bootable or otherwise broken.

2 months ago, I learned of Image mode for RHEL, a new method of deploying RHEL that used OCI images for updates. Rebasing on Enterprise Linux and using bootc, the technology behind Image mode for RHEL would solve both of the issues that I found with Debian. After various experiments, HeliumOS announced an Alpha release based on CentOS Stream.

We’ve attended quite a few events in the US this summer! In June, we attended Southeast LinuxFest in Charlotte, North Carolina. In July, we traveled to Denver, Colorado for Academy Open Source Days and SIGGRAPH 2024. This month, we went to Rochester, New York for Flock to Fedora. Let’s talk about what we loved about each of them. 

Southeast LinuxFest

SouthEast LinuxFest is a community event for anyone who wants to learn more about Linux and Open Source Software. This relatively small event was a new one for me, and I’m so glad we went! I got to meet a couple of our contributors, have some really good conversations, and, even ensure that everyone there celebrated National Donut Day.

We’re happy to announce that ELevate just received the biggest update since 2021 when the project was first announced.

How did we get here

For anyone new, ELevate allows you to upgrade in-place from older Enterprise Linux distributions to supported versions. It uses the Leapp utility with a few patches and a data library called leapp-data.

Last month we announced that ELevateNG would get promoted to stable this week, and after tons of community-contributed feedback, the time is here! Let’s dive into what has been updated.

In August of 2021 we first launched our new and improved mirror system, including the geo-location feature that allows users to automatically use the closest mirror to them. This had the incredible benefit of making sure users had the fastest access to updates possible. In the time since we launched, we’ve grown from around 100 mirror servers to over 400. The majority of these mirrors are hosted at universities, businesses, and institutions that believe in our mission and want to show their support.

AlmaLinux OS 9 is impacted by a newly disclosed vulnerability in OpenSSH’s server (sshd) in glibc-based Linux systems similiar to last week’s CVE-2024-6387. The new vulnerability has been assigned the identifier CVE-2024-6409. It involves a signal handler race condition, which could expose your system to potential security risks.

At AlmaLinux, we place security first and we are committed to delivering patches to our users as quickly as possible, especially when our community needs them. The decision to build the update and push the package to production without waiting for a CentOS Stream or RHEL update was made by our newly-formed technical steering committee, ALESCo.

On June 30th CentOS 7 hit end of life, ending the long-loved and widely used CentOS Linux era. While the CentOS Project continues on with CentOS Stream, much of the world still needs another option for updates or upgrading with CentOS 7. The AlmaLinux community has a few options for you. If you are running an AlmaLinux OS 9 machine, you need to know about a vulnerability in OpenSSH’s server (sshd) in glibc-based Linux systems that was published earlier today, July 1, 2024. It has been assigned the identifier CVE-2024-6387 and named regreSSHion. This vulnerability is exploitable remotely and grants unauthenticated root access.

Security is our top priority at AlmaLinux and we aim to deliver patches to our users as quickly as possible. The openssh patch for CVE-2024-6387 has been released and is available for AlmaLinux OS 9 users. The decision to build the update and push the package to production on our own (without a CentOS Stream/RHEL update) was made by our newly-formed technical steering committee, ALESCo.

How it all started

When I joined the AlmaLinux Community, I had a keen interest in Raspberry Pi images. How Elevate supports business needs

AlmaLinux Day: Germany - Recap

This past March, we hosted AlmaLinux Day: Germany right next to CloudFest in Rust, Germany. Similar to AlmaLinux Day: Tokyo in December 2023, AlmaLinux Day: Germany focused on the needs and desires of the AlmaLinux community. Sessions covered everything from VFX to HPC to people using AlmaLinux as an upstream provider – from all over the world. We had nearly 300 attendees, we were elated to engage with our community in such a tangible way.

Last month we highlighted our achievements from the CloudFest Hackathon, including our work on a significant improvement for the ELevate project. The Hackathon Team started working on enabling the migration of CentOS 6 machines to CentOS 7 within the ELevate Project.

Today, we are proud to announce that CentOS 6 to CentOS 7 migrations are now a reality in ELevate, making this migration available to users.

I remember back in March when I went to CloudFest I was so excited to meet benny Vasquez, the chair of AlmaLinux OS Foundation, and when I got the chance to speak to her she gave me a lot of inspiration to contribute to AlmaLinux in any way I can.

The new AlmaLinux releases are coming shortly (expect our beta releases for 9.4 and 8.10 over the next couple of weeks!), and we’d like to talk about one of the vital components of each system - its security. It’s important to keep your system secure and one of the easiest ways that is rarely talked about is by enabling Secure Boot.

AlmaLinux OS has provided Secure Boot since its 8.4 release.

CVE-2024-1086 - call for testing

In January of this year, a kernel flaw was disclosed and named CVE-2024-1086. This flaw is trivially exploitable on most RHEL-equivalent systems. There are many proof-of-concept posts available now, including one from our Infrastructure team lead, Jonathan Wright (Dealing with CVE-2024-1086). In multi-user scenarios, this flaw is especially problematic.

SCaLE 21x

Earlier this month, we had three back-to-back events: CentOS Connect, FOSDEM, and our AlmaLinux Leadership Summit. Here’s what to know about them for those who weren’t there, and a little bit about what’s to come.

CentOS Connect

CentOS Connect is always a great place for us to connect with the folks most invested in one of our favorite upstream projects. We met tons of people and learned a ton! At this year’s event our Cloud and Virt Team Lead Elkhan Mammadli was able to share a talk about how we automated testing here at AlmaLinux with openQA and Testinfra. The talk was recorded, so you can watch it yourself!

Hello, Community! We are excited to share that we are about to release a great deal of updates for the ELevate Project.

ELevate now supports EPEL and more

ELevate, a fork of Red Hat’s Leapp project, supports migrations between CentOS 7 and Enterprise Linux (EL) 8, and between EL8 and EL9 systems. It has helped more than 50,000 systems upgrade in place, allowing our global community to easily keep their infrastructure updated and more secure. The AlmaLinux community is constantly working on improving the project.

Hey Community! We’re just sharing some news on both AlmaLinux 9.3 and 8.9 images updates.

Cloud and Container Images Updates and Changes

AlmaLinux OS provides a variety of cloud images, so we’ve been updating them to 9.3 and 8.9 versions including:

• Amazon AWS
  • Starting AlmaLinux OS versions 8.9 and 9.3 Amazon Machine images have UEFI boot support. Thus boot mode was changed to the uefi-preferred meaning that UEFI will be chosen on the supported instance types. We are planning to publish separate AMIs with enabled Secure Boot and NitroTPM(vTPM) support.
• Generic Cloud
  • Starting AlmaLinux OS 8.9 Generic Cloud images have hybrid - BIOS and UEFI - boot support. The download URLs of the UEFI images are symlinked to the current image for compatibility.
• OpenNebula
  • Starting AlmaLinux OS 8.9 Generic Cloud images have hybrid - BIOS and UEFI - boot support.
• Microsoft Azure images for x86_64 and AArch64 architectures
• Oracle Cloud Infrastructure

Container images have been updated as well. You can get official Docker images and OCI Images from Quay.io.

Late last year we experienced a system failure that resulted in the loss of the master key that would allow us to extend the life of the GPG key that we use to sign packages for AlmaLinux 8, and it is set to expire in January of 2024. While we have ensured that this won’t happen again, some users will need to take specific steps to import the new GPG key.

2023 was a big year for the AlmaLinux community. As the year draws to a close, let’s take a look back at some big milestones!

New versions of AlmaLinux OS

2023 marked the release of AlmaLinux 9.2, AlmaLinux 8.8, AlmaLinux 9.3, and AlmaLinux 8.9! Thanks to our amazing Core, Build, and Infra SIGs, our first releases this year were out at lightning speed. Even with the expanded testing that we’ve added with our implementation of OpenQA, 9.2 was released the same day as RHEL (Red Hat Enterprise Linux) 9.2, and 8.8 was released just 2 days after RHEL 8.8! After we changed our release process in July, we expected longer delays for AlmaLinux 9.3 and 8.9, but even those were only a week behind RHEL.

Hello, Community! Today, AlmaLinux OS Foundation is eager to share some big news concerning our ELevate project, an initiative to support migrations between major versions of RHEL-derivatives.

Previously, the project only provided support for official operating systems repositories, excluding external repositories. However, the AlmaLinux Team made significant improvements.

We are thrilled to announce that the first step in EPEL support is now included in the ELevate project, enabling smooth migrations between CentOS7 and AlmaLinux 8.

In just over two months we’ll be returning to FOSDEM again with a stand, a bunch of friends, and this time we get to help host the Distros Dev Room! 

What is a Developer Room?

From the FOSDEM website:

Developer rooms are assigned to self-organising groups to work together on open source projects, to discuss topics relevant to a broader subset of the community, etc.

The general idea is that a group of people get together to organize a mini-event inside the FOSDEM umbrella. The groups of folks submit a proposal to the FOSDEM organizers, and then recruit content and build a schedule for the room. Everyone involved is likely to be a volunteer, but the content is always extremely beneficial, and presented by leaders and experts on their topics.

The Center for Internet Security, to quote their website, is a community-driven nonprofit, responsible for the CIS Controls and CIS Benchmarks, globally recognized best practices for securing IT systems and data.

This year has been full of all kinds of new and exciting steps for AlmaLinux. We topped 500,000 systems calling home to our now 300+ mirrors for updates. We began exploring what AlmaLinux looks like as an untethered enterprise linux operating system, and we’ve seen an outpouring of support from AlmaLinux users around the world. Hello, Community! Since AlmaLinux OS has shifted its direction to RHEL compatibility, we can now provide additional content for our community. For that reason, two additional repositories have been added - Testing and Synergy. Today, we are announcing that both repositories are available for AlmaLinux OS 8 and AlmaLinux OS 9.

Testing Repository

As we mentioned last week, the Testing repository contains security updates that AlmaLinux OS is now able to release without waiting for the patches to be released upstream. As these packages require additional testing before being released, we invite the community to help test them and provide feedback.

Earlier this week a few vulnerabilities were reported to affect Intel and AMD CPUs. The AlmaLinux OS Foundation calls for the community to help test the freshly updated packages for AlmaLinux OS 8 and AlmaLinux OS 9.

How do I install updated packages?

As we recently changed the build process for AlmaLinux OS, and are now aiming to be RHEL compatible with Red Hat Enterprise Linux, we are now able to release updates without waiting for the patches to be released upstream. To help accommodate that, a Testing repo has been created for packages that differ from RHEL and require additional testing by our users. To be able to help with testing, the Testing repo should be enabled on the AlmaLinux machine:

It’s been a whirlwind few weeks here at AlmaLinux, and I’m elated to be able to finally share this update.

The future of AlmaLinux OS

In case you missed it, Red Hat announced they will no longer be providing the means for downstream clones to continue to be 1:1 binary copies of Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL). Very quickly, both Jack and I shared some initial thoughts, but we intentionally took our time deciding the next right step for AlmaLinux OS. After much discussion, the AlmaLinux OS Foundation board today has decided to drop the aim to be 1:1 with RHEL. AlmaLinux OS will instead aim to be binary compatible with RHEL*.

As we discussed last week, on June 21 Red Hat announced that RHEL source code will only be available via the Red Hat Customer Portal.

What is the status of security updates?

Prior to Red Hat’s policy change, when RHEL published a package update of any sort (security or bugfix), they published the corresponding source code into a repository. Then AlmaLinux integrated the update into our own build and test system, produced a new RPM, and published it to our repositories.

Yesterday, RedHat announced another massive shift that impacts all rebuilds and forks of Red Hat Enterprise Linux. Going forward Red Hat will now only be releasing the source code for RHEL RPMs behind their customer portal. Since all RHEL clones rely on the sources being published, this is causing disruption for the entire Red Hat ecosystem, once again.

Earlier today at a press event in Tokyo, Japan, we announced the newest member of the AlmaLinux family: CyberTrust Japan, a well known security company, and the powerhouse behind MIRACLE LINUX.

Over the last few months of getting to know the CyberTrust folks, I have been able to glimpse the considerate, thoughtful, and informed way they approach all decisions, and it has made me even more humbled when considering their decision to join forces with the AlmaLinux community. Their team brings an incredible amount of experience in building a stable, secure, and reliable Red Hat clone, as well as a proven track record of listening to their community.

We had a chance to attend All Things Open last week, and it was an absolute blast for us! In case you haven’t heard, All Things Open is a conference specifically designed around education and aimed at coming together to learn some of the hardest and deepest lessons in tech. It’s just full of everyone from college students to CIOs and CTOs trying to make the best decisions for their futures. Hello, IBM Z fans and Linux world at large. Today we have an interesting story to share about a new release - AlmaLinux 8.6 for s390x. The thing is, this release should not exist! Let’s explain.

In general, we build an AlmaLinux release by consuming upstream sources from the CentOS git and pulling those into our AlmaLinux Git Server which are then built using by the AlmaLinux Build System. While the CentOS project built releases for a few architectures, CentOS 8 was never built for IBM Z!

Over a month ago I announced that we would be holding our first board election. Our nearly 300 members of the AlmaLinux OS Foundation have spent the last two weeks casting their votes for the new board, and I am very happy to announce the newest board. These seven nominees have been elected by the community to serve a three-year term as the AlmaLinux OS Foundation board members.

How the election worked

The AlmaLinux bylaws were set up to include regular elections, to ensure AlmaLinux could achieve the goal of all foundation members having a voice.

After a year and a half, the time has finally come! The first election for the AlmaLinux OS Foundation board of directors is set to take place in September this year. This is a big moment for us and for the community at large, so we want to be as transparent and forthcoming as possible.

Let’s take a look at where we’re at right now.

When we started the AlmaLinux OS Foundation we didn’t have members to vote into a board, and so all current board members were appointed. Though necessary at the start of any such organization, it is ultimately counter to our goal of ensuring that the folks who are invested in the future of AlmaLinux are the ones to choose the future of AlmaLinux. Our bylaws were setup to include regular elections from the start, to ensure we could achieve the goal of all community members having a voice.

The Top500 Supercomputers list released for the June 2022 update came out a short while ago and some community members spotted a familiar name on the list–AlmaLinux! CentOS was such a large part of the HPC community and AlmaLinux is continuing that tradition. We’ve been working closely with many in the HPC space including software and hardware vendors, super computer operators and researchers to make sure things continue to run smoothly for those in the HPC space looking for their next steps and providing a drop-in replacement.

Tenable provides coverage of AlmaLinux with the addition of a new Nessus plugin family. The plugin has been released to cover all existing advisories for AlmaLinux.

Nessus is one of the world’s most popular and deployed proprietary vulnerability scanners developed by Tenable. The security checks information is free and available immediately.

As information about new vulnerabilities is discovered and released publicly, The AlmaLinux team updates our errata and OVAL feeds. We’ve been working with the Tenable Research team to help them ingest and utilize those feeds in order to design programs to detect them. These programs are named plugins and are written in the Nessus Attack Scripting Language (NASL). The plugins contain vulnerability information, a simplified set of remediation actions and the algorithm to test for the presence of the security issue.

Wouldya take a look at that? A million! A million pulls of our Docker Library Official Image. What a huge milestone, WOW! We’re seriously humbled and we’d like to thank the community, for all the contribution and support. AlmaLinux keeps getting better each day thanks to the efforts of our amazing community.

We’ve also officially release containers for ppc64le available on all the major registries and we’ve also gone ahead and updated our containers to 8.5.4 and patched against the latest security updates where applicable. 18 packages have been updated and you can see that work here.

Hello Community! We’re currently in the midst of rethinking our web presence and associated entities. Our site is our face to the world and is the primary source of information and resources for tens of thousands of visitors each month. As we continue to grow we want to make sure the site gets even better and more useful, informative, localized and accessible.

To that end, we would like to put out a call for ideas, improvements and also contributors. Our current stack is django and python and lives here on github. We’re not necessarily against moving to a different stack if anyone has a good idea and thinks they can pull it off.

Hey Community, just wanted to share some quick news on updates to Live Media and cloud images. All Live media have been updated to 8.5 thanks to the great efforts on the parts of our community and our Live Media SIG.

All variants are now updated to AlmaLinux 8.5 including GNOME Mini, GNOME, KDE and XFCE.

You can now grab Live Media images from repo.almalinux.org.

Sources are up on GitHub with build scripts and the configuration and kickstart files needed to produce Live Media images: github.com/AlmaLinux/sig-livemedia just in case you’d like to tweak any of them to your liking.

WOW! What a first year! The AlmaLinux community finds itself looking back at a successful 12 months with so many significant advancements and milestones. We’ve managed to pull together people from all over the world and unite and unify everyone while leveling-up this new CentOS ecosystem. We’ve also delivered three releases, with download counts in the millions. We recently celebrated over 500K Docker pulls (we have almost a million now), a beta release for AlmaLinux 8.5 for PowerPC, our first Platinum sponsor Codenotary, and, of course, the release of AlmaLinux 8.5 within 48 hours of the Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) release. That was all just in the last couple of months.

We had a couple of goals when we set out on this project. First, is to further enable scientific computing and research. That is something that we feel very strongly about and many across the vast expanse of scientific research have begun to start leveraging the cloud due to the lack of resource constraints there. It is much easier to do you work whether it be simulations or something else if you can add nodes instantly with a quick command in your terminal. Second, HPC is often out of reach for many due to the large investment that is typically required. Combining the benefits of cloud economies-of-scale along with HPC technology opens the door for many to be able to experience what HPC is and what it really do. We hope that it will inspire those already there to explore what more they can accomplish and inspire the next generation of scientists and researchers to begin experimenting.

About two months ago we eagerly announced that we were able to then open memberships for the AlmaLinux OS Foundation. I outlined why I thought it was important that we’d structured the governance of the project this way–in order to give community members true ownership and a direct voice in the direction of AlmaLinux OS. The reception was tremendous and we’ve had hundreds of applicants and we’ve so far approved, I believe over 100 community members and dozens of mirror members. It’s very encouraging and refreshing to see the community rise to the occasion. I salute each and every person who has been active in our wonderful community, has helped to make it such a welcoming, friendly and diverse place and has taken the step to make their voice heard.

Hello Community. Security minded people rejoice! Today, we are pleased to announce that the Center for Internet Security CIS Benchmark for AlmaLinux OS has been published and is now available.

For those less familiar, what are CIS Benchmarks you ask? CIS Benchmarks are known best methods for the secure configuration of a target system that are both developed and accepted by the government, business, industry, and academia. You can use a CIS-made tool, CIS-CAT, to run and audit and compare the system’s configuration to the benchmark and generate a report that contains all the potential issues with the security.

We are extremely happy to announce our migration project for major version of RHEL-derivative distributions. We like to call it ELevate. Get it? EL evate? Yeah, anyway…

Before we get started, let’s be smart. We HIGHLY recommend that you follow system administration best practices and make sure you have backups and/or snapshots of your system before you proceed. It is recommended to do a trial run in a sandbox to verify that migration worked as expected before you attempt to migrate any production system.

Hello to all of you amazing folks invested in the success of AlmaLinux!

I wanted to provide you with a bit of an update around memberships, the membership plans, and the membership committee.

Since we opened the membership application process for the AlmaLinux OS Foundation almost two weeks ago we’ve already had 76 people and organizations apply to be members at one of the membership levels. At the October meeting of the Board of Directors we also approved the plans for the governance of the membership committee, which we’ll be adding to the website shortly.

Presenting the AlmaLinux OS 8.5 Beta, codenamed Arctic Sphynx, for the x86_64 and Arm architectures, now ready for testing!

We’re excited about it too, but we have to remind you: this is a BETA release and should not be used for production installations. The provided upgrade instructions should not be used on production machines, unless you don’t mind if something breaks. Now if you wanna test this somehow, somewhere to see how things will work in 8.5 stable, you’re on the right track.

I like crocheting, reading (though it’s mostly audiobooks these days), card games, board games, baking, music, and wine. I’ve even successfully kept a Jade plant alive for more than a year (a personal record). I spent much of my early career in Windows desktop support and web hosting, moved to DevOps a couple years ago, and earlier today we announced that I’m taking on the leadership position on the Board of Directors for the AlmaLinux OS Foundation.

It’s a great day for some tasty Pi! Today we’re releasing some awesome Raspberry Pi updates. You can grab them from the AlmaLinux Raspberry Pi Github Repo.

New Raspberry Pi Repo

We’ve setup a new repo to host all Raspberry Pi packages at https://repo.almalinux.org/almalinux/8/raspberrypi/. This will enable super easy updates in the future and that should be syncing to all of our global mirrors.

Kernel and (properly working!) Wi-Fi

We’ve bumped the Kernel to 5.10.60 and we’ve built a new linux-firmware package with Matthias Brugger’s RPi NVRAM fix which enables the Wi-Fi to work right out of the box now.

Hello Community. Today we announced that membership in the AlmaLinux Foundation is now open to everyone (It’s 100% Free). First of all, many are probably asking what is this? Second, who cares? I wanted to take a few brief moments to share some insight, some feelings and hopefully explain why this is so important.

When CentOS was initially founded by Lance Davis in 2004 no one really knew how fundamentally important it would grow to become in the Linux ecosystem–as a concept, as a distribution and really as a lynchpin of the modern internet. The concept of a community-driven OS, which drew upon an enterprise grade base made freely and widely available was a real novelty. As far as the technical aspect, the “entOS” part of CentOS, it has been resoundingly successful.

Those include aarch64 support for our AWS AMIs, support for OpenNebula x86_64 and aarch64, and aarch64 support for our Generic (cloud-init) Cloud images/OpenStack.

Today, we are glad to announce the availability of AlmaLinux OS on the Azure marketplace. Images are available for both Gen1 and Gen2 and are deployable from the Azure portal, Azure command line utility as well as from the marketplace link.

Aside from just images, we’ve also established a worldwide mirror network within Azure regions in order to make the user experience when installing updates or new software second to none. All updates and/or software installations will automatically use local Azure mirrors, thanks to our new mirror service released a little while ago. The best part is, its all transparent to you, the user.

Hi Community! We’ve got some great news. Announcing our AlmaLinux 8 Live Media beta.

Currently, the Beta is available in 2 variants:

• GNOME Mini: contains a core GNOME environment with the Firefox browser
• GNOME: contains a full GNOME environment with popular workstation applications like LibreOffice, Thunderbird and so on.

Also, stay tuned because KDE and XFCE Live Media images are coming soon.

Images support both BIOS and UEFI (including Secure Boot mode), can be written to DVD or USB media.

Great news about our mirror service! Our mirror service is what powers distribution of ISOs, packages and updates across the world. A while ago we developed and started testing a new geolocation-based mirror service which helps you get software faster and easier based on where in the world you are and what the closest source is. There’s been a lot of progress since the AlmaLinux Beta release was announced back in January 2021. The AlmaLinux community has grown enormously, and we’ve established the AlmaLinux governance board.

This release was the true product of collaboration. Minimal Image

The minimal image is a stripped-down image that uses the microdnf package manager and contains a very limited package set. It is designed for applications that come with their own dependencies bundled (e.g. NodeJS, Python). The almalinux:minimal tag always points to the most recent version of the minimal image. Tags for major (e.g. almalinux:8-minimal) and minor (e.g. almalinux:8.4-minimal) releases are also available.

Thanks to the community feedback, we worked on the bugs and fixed most of them. By all accounts, the beta release was pretty stable already, so the Release Candidate was the likely choice (instead of another beta).

Installation instructions

• There are three installation ISO images available:AlmaLinux-8.3-rc-1-x86_64-boot.iso - a single network installation CD image that downloads packages over the Internet.
• AlmaLinux-8.3-rc-1-x86_64-minimal.iso - a minimal self-containing DVD image that makes possible offline installation.
• AlmaLinux-8.3-rc-1-x86_64-dvd1.iso - a full installation DVD image that contains mostly all AlmaLinux OS packages.

• On Monday, February 1st, AlmaLinux OS went live! Our public Beta version is now available to everyone, and we anticipate your active participation in testing! To facilitate the communication and address the questions you might have after the first round of tests, we are hosting a live QA webinar with AlmaLinux OS Community on February 10 at 5 PM (UTC) / 9 AM (PST). We are excited to share the results of the past month with you - the first AlmaLinux OS Beta release is live. As promised, the main development and maintenance were done by the CloudLinux team. And now, we appeal to the community for its contribution. In the spirit of the community-driven initiative, we require your assistance with testing, documentation, support and future direction.Our team has set up the internal infrastructure necessary to work with your feedback: We opened public repositories with all packages and registries for the project.
• We will use Github for the finalized source code for the system.
• The additional documentation is on the wiki.
• Another important tool that is released with the AlmaLinux OS Beta is the bug tracker. We will rely heavily on the bug tickets for further development of the infrastructure. To avoid spam, we ask you to not report a bug without registration.We want to highlight, once again, that AlmaLinux OS is a community-driven initiative. Our hope is that the structures that were put in place will ensure your involvement in the preparation of the new distro! CloudLinux is proud to announce the release of AlmaLinux OS Beta. We’ve collected community feedback and built our new beta release around what you would expect from an enterprise-level Linux distribution. AlmaLinux OS is a completely free 1:1 binary compatible fork of Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) 8, inspired by the community and built by the engineers and talent behind CloudLinux. Visit this link to download Beta images.With the Beta release deployed, we’d like to ask the community to be involved and provide feedback. We aim to build a Linux distribution entirely from community contributions and feedback. During AlmaLinux OS Beta, we ask for assistance in testing, documentation, support and future direction for the operating system. Together, we can build a Linux distribution that fills the gap left by the now unsupported CentOS distribution.The AlmaLinux team set up all the necessary infrastructure to make it convenient for our contributors to provide their input. Throughout the last few weeks, the team at CloudLinux has worked tirelessly to gear our internal infrastructure to meet the needs of launching a free, open, public Linux distro that’s driven by the community. We’ve committed to AlmaLinux OS, and we see the associated responsibilities in a serious light. While we are preparing the new distro for launch within the next month, we are also putting in place the structures that will ensure continuity for AlmaLinux OS - and that ensures community involvement.
